Over the past several weeks, the Stronach Group has been holding a contest at both Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park to select a Ms. Racing Queen.

The contest, similar to a beauty pageant, is being used to select contestants for Ms. Racing Queen. The winner will be crowned on March 24 in South Florida, and will represent the Stronach Group at the Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 30, the Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 6, and the Grade I Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course near Baltimore, Md., on May 18.

The winner will also receive a top prize of $100,000.

At the Brooklyn Backstretch, one contest hopeful, Catherine Toner, wrote an open letter to the Stronach Group, saying that the contest officials should be focusing on the ‘true’ Racing Queens – those racetrack employees that work countless hours on the backstretch and that possess a true love of the horses and the sport that they work in – and not an outdated, demeaning beauty pageant.

Racing Queen? I would say that’s Beholder…BUT if not her, then I agree with Ms. Toner…let’s give the title to someone who actually puts her all into working with these magnificent animals.

      AMEN to THAT SISTER!!!…ty…

  • Old Man

A very well written article that makes a lot of sense. BTW Catherine, how about some pictures?

  • bob

    I vote for Royal Delta.

  • Quilla

Oh, snap!  Well said, Ms. Toner.

I’ve always thought (however, not seriously) that each race day, on each track, should have a vote of the “prettiest” horse.  Hey, isn’t that the criteria that some use for wagering purposes?  Prettiest horse doesn’t always win a race but it could be crowned for being a beauty queen/handsome king.

Something like that is “sometimes” done on bigger race days when certain organizations sponsor “the best turned out horse” award for specific races.  What I loved about it was it gave the recognition to the groom that was responsible for caring for the horse over the PA system as well.  Very nice gesture.

Thank you for that information. I’ve never seen this but, as you pointed out, it also does reward the groom for doing an excellent job.

Perhaps Miss Racing Queen should be a woman who best exemplifies women in our sport, regardless of age or chest size.

Rosie Napravnik is “THE Queen” of T-Bred Horse Racing…And before all is said and done she may be “The King” TOO!!!…ty…

  • Jay Robbins

Would love to know from where the funding for this came.

  • ASL

Ms. Toner hit the nail on the head with her open letter.  Kudos.

    RIGHT ON, CATHERINE! Well written!

  • jorge

Catherine, Well said. Right On. Your dad should be very proud of you. You get my vote.

  • desertrailrat

Holy cow! 100% correct, amazingly well written , I pity Mr. Stronach I would not want to have Ms. Toner mad at me! This should be a no brainer for next year, women that work with animals are more beautiful inside and out then any wanna be model could dream of being.

give the family a break. They do more good then bad. Stop judging. Not to many people in the world who loose a billion dollars and still don’t give up. It’s going to make someone’s day. Maybe not yours but someones. Compared to other race track owners there miles ahead.
