Trainer Doug O’Neill and his crew had a great run through the Triple Crown with their talented colt, I’ll Have Another. Even though the chestnut colt was injured and has been retired, it hasn’t meant that O’Neill has had to stop ‘cashing in’ on his luck.

On Monday, O’Neill added another five-figure payday when he cashed in a winning future book bet at Lucky’s Race & Sports Book in the Primm Valley Resort in Southern Nevada. The winning wager was worth $20,000.

Several members of Team O’Neill made bets on I’ll Have Another back in February, but O’Neill’s $100 bet at 200-1 odds was by far the biggest.

O’Neill carried the ticket with him throughout the Triple Crown. “If I ever let myself get bummed, I was like ‘ you know, I’ve still got that 20 g’s to hang on to,’ ” O’Neill said. “That was definitely an added bonus.”

Well done, Doug. That’s putting your money where your mouth is.

Now be sure to declare it on your federal income taxes. I’m sure California will want a cut, too.

  • WILLIAM L. ANTON

That is only a small amount when it comes to his future legal fees and fines.

  • The Cubs are in last place Ray

Buffalo Bills ?  That’s like Ray making a future wager on the Cubs.

Don’t blow it all on your upcoming 45 day vacation Drug, cos I’ve got a feelin you haven’t, nor ever will, learn your lesson. Hearing you moan about the $250,000 attorney fee’s you’ve already shelled out so frequently, but never apologizing for the murder of the gallant mare, BURNA DETTE, shows how self absorbed you are. Rest in Peace sweet gal. Please know, that no actual horseman would have butchered you rather than allow you to become a broodmare, as God intended.

  • Breezetowin

Well, seems IHA’s connections have made alot of money on him!  We realistically can’t complain that O’Neill made the bet….just that we didn’t make the bet !  Seems the “important” players cashed in well in the past week…only to see IHA sent off to Japan….and, everyone wonders why fans are turned-off !  When are owners going to wake up?

  • Don Reed

This is exactly who O’Neill The Lowlife is: The salvation of his soul, his honor, his principles, revolve around how much money he has in his pocket.

I’m looking forward to seeing him hitchhiking on I-5 in 2020.

  • Don Reed

He would have cleaned up last night, with The Generous Mets making three errors, and the Cubs scoring four unearned runs.

If we keep this up, here comes the ESPN munchkins – assigning “unforced errors” to the gate starters.  Hide!

  • Don Reed

Given that California is so financially destitute, if Doug wants to hold on to any of that dough, he’s going to have to join up with that Facebook Harvard schmuck who fled to Singapore, a tax refugee.

Seriously, a Vegas Future win bet regardless of amount bet/won – isn’t that tax free, just like a $2 win bet at Belmont?

  • stillriledup

Any “income” you make in horse betting is taxable income. Some people think that it might not be ‘taxable’ because you don’t have a ‘signer’ attached to it, but its just as taxable as the ‘signer’ longshot trifecta you cash.

  • Vickijensen65

Any casino winnings/lottery/horse racing wager wins are 100% tax free in Canada.  But at any rate, if I was smart enough to place a future bet back in Feb  in the U.S. on IHA at those odds, even w/ the withholding tax, I’d be ahead.  Good for Doug – just having some fun w/ $100.00, just like I do w/ the KDerby future pools, except I only wager $20.00…

  • Vickijensen65

Seems it wouldn’t matter if Doug O’Neil saved a child from a burning building, you’d find some sinister reason for his actions.  He placed a future bet back in Feb & cashed in.  Wow, a trainer who believed in his horse & had some fun.
If you thought the spirit of the article was all about the money, you need to read it again and/or get a sense of humour.  I didn’t bet IHA in the Future back in Feb but wish I had.  Oh well.  Not all trainers bet but those that do, I’d worry about the ones who don’t pick their horses.

  • Don Reed

California will want to confiscate every penny of it, in order to bail out their bankrupt teacher’s pension Ponzi scheme.  What they can take is another story.

  • Don Reed

My Dear V65: Doug O’Neill is such a happy, go-lucky guy.

The very smiling face of racing on Derby Day, don’t you think?

A true & valued ambassador of the sport.

If you win the U.S. Open golf tournament, you’re invited back each year, for
    the rest of your life.

Along these lines. we MUST petition Churchill Downs – to ask that Doug be
granted a lifetime exception from that future race’s annual entry requirements.

(Honestly: I don’t understand why they haven’t already made him that race’s
    head steward!)

But, to the detriment of his pristine reputation & the media glory that he
has earned,  I have digressed.  Forgive me.

He is savior of every Elks lodge &
bowling alley league in the U.S.A.

What’s more, the Girl Scouts simply can’t bake cookies fast enough to
replenish their stores, in the aftermath of his kind-hearted wholesale
purchases from his local GSA distributor.

Why – History has it all wrong! It wasn’t Alexander III, in the aftermath of
the 1888 Borki train wreck disaster, who, with his prodigious strength, single-handedly saved the
lives of the Tsarina & their children.

    It was Doug.

And more people should know this. With your efforts & guidance, The Word
will get out.  Keep up the good work!

  • Don Reed

P.S. What in the world is wrong with me?!
I have a conflict of interest going here, one to which I should
    immediately confess:

I too bet on I’ll Have Another in the February Derby Future pool.

    $2.

I suppose that I should resent the fact that Doug’s $20,000 knocked my
winning odds down to about 29-1; that my return on investment was thus
diminished to such a drastic extent.

But I do not.  Since May 5th, I have basked
    in his reflected glory, gratefully.

  • stillriledup

Doug’s bet wasnt into the Ky Derby future pools offered by Churchill. Doug bet with Vegas. Doug got 200-1 odds. Because Churchill downs doesnt have the capabilities to offer more than 24 betting options (yes, in 2012 they still cant figure out a way to have 300+ betting options on their Derby future pool) there’s no way any horse would ever be 200-1 in the official CD betting pool. This is why Doug was smart, he bet with a place that BOOKED his bet and didnt bet it into the pari-mutuel pools offered by Churchill themselves.

  • Don Reed

Good catch (someone’s paying attention!).  I realized about a half-hour after I posted the $2 message that D’ON had bet with a Vegas outfit, not the febble CD Future Bet.

CD amazes me.  They have electroninc grids that can tell you instantly what the probable will-pays will be with various number combinations, IN NOTHING RACES! –  -

At the same time that they refuse to upgrade their pee wee 24-horse advance betting system FOR THE ONE RACE ALL YEAR THAT ANYONE CARES ABOUT.

    I smell nepotisim.
