Jockeys Luis Saez and Jose Lezcano were both recovering Sunday from a spill that occurred during the running of the fifth race Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Saez, the third leading rider at Gulfstream with 68 victories, was recovering at Memorial Regional Hospital with a “very small hairline fracture of the hip, pelvis area,” according to agent Richard DePass. Saez was expected to be released from the hospital Sunday or Monday.

“He’s going to be out between three-and-five weeks, according to the doctors,” DePass said. “They think because of his age, and the fact he’s an athlete, he will heal a lot quicker. Considering what happened, he’s doing very well.”

Lezcano, tied for fourth in the jockey standings with 53 wins, was released from the hospital Saturday evening. Lezcano suffered a sprained ankle and was off his mounts Sunday at Gulfstream. Jockey Francisco Torres who was also involved in the spill walked away from the incident. All three horses returned safely to their barns.

Everyone was very lucky in that spill. It was just a pungle of bodies everywhere you looked and it all happened very fast.

Good luck to all three of you. Wow, it could have been so much worse!
