Jockey Jose Ferrer was taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J. after being unseated by No Veggies at the top of the stretch in the final race at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
“He was complaining of shortness of breath,” said Dr. Angelo Chinnici, medical director for the racetrack. “He had multiple soft tissue injuries and a possible concussion. He was taken to Monmouth Medical for observation and evaluation via X-ray.”
Ferrer, aboard No Veggies, had just made the lead at the top of the stretch when his filly broke down, unseating the rider. The filly was humanely euthanized on the racetrack.
