Female jockeys dominate the standings at Suffolk Downs
There is a somewhat unique occurrence happening at the current Suffolk Downs summer race meet. Seven of the jockeys, including the top two in the standings, are women.
In a racing year that has so far seen Chantal Sutherland become the first female jockey to win the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) and Rosie Napravnik guide Believe You Can to victory in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), having one or two female jockeys at the racetrack is almost commonplace.
Having seven women in one riding colony truly is unrivalled.
“You can’t deny that we’re girls,” said Jackie Davis, the daughter of Robbie Davis who currently is second in the standings. “That’s always going to be the way it is because in the real world there’s always the thought that men are physically stronger than women. But we’ve obviously come a long way, and on the track, I never felt like some guy tried to run me over because I was a girl.”
