Jockey Javier Castellano has been named to ride Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Sept. 28.

The Daily Racing Form reported that Castellano had been secured for the ride after the injury to Jose Lezcano, who rode Orb in the G1 Travers Stakes. Lezcano, who was a replacement for the injured Joel Rosario, was subsequently injured and is uncertain to be back in time. Rosario is on the mend from a broken foot, and won’t be back until the first week in October.

“They’ve been wanting to ride him since last winter,” McGaughey said of Castellano. “I felt very comfortable with that decision. Jose Lezcano rode him great, but he’s hurt.”

When did Jose Lezcano get injured ? I still have high hopes for Orb, no matter who rides him. I believe he is an AWESOME horse !!

MBR, he broke his wrist not too long after riding in the Travers. I’m with you on Orb; pulling big time for him!

I also like Orb – so good luck to him and his connections.
