Quotes courtesy Breeders’ Cup

Bill Spawr (Amazombie, Sprint, post 11) – “I love it. He usually gets the one, this time he got two ones (11). He should be out in the clear with no excuses from there. Traffic is usually rough in this race down inside, but he should be able to avoid it.”

Buff Bradley, (Groupie Doll, Filly & Mare Sprint, post 9) – “I like it; I really do. I definitely did not want the one through four. It’s a good spot for when she wants to run. She can dictate what the others do from there.”

Charles Lopresti, (Wise Dan, Mile, post 2) – “I don’t really think it matters. He was in the three at Woodbine (for the Ricoh Mile) and in the Shadwell, I have his saddle towel right here on the wall in my house, he was five. I’d rather be there than on the outside. It looks like there is a lot of speed in there and he should be able to get covered up.”

Dale Romans, (Dullahan, Turf, post 9; Little Mike, Turf, post 7; Shackleford, Dirt Mile, post 6; Sustained, Juvenile Fillies Turf, post 14; Moonwalk, Juvenile Fillies Turf, post 11; Summit County, Juvenile Turf, post 1) – “The two fillies didn’t do too well, but everyone else drew great. Shackleford is to the inside of Emcee, which is good.”

Graham Motion (Animal Kingdom, Mile, post 5) – “I don’t think I could have scripted it better. I like that he’s right in the middle. I think it’s perfect.

Graham Motion (Kitten’s Point, Juvenile Fillies Turf, post 1) - “I think it’s going to be OK. It’s a large field and she’ll be able to save a lot of ground. I think (jockey) Rafael (Bejarano) can put her where she’ll be comfortable.”

Jack Wolf, owner Starlight Racing, (Shanghai Bobby, Juvenile, post 4) – “It seems fine to me. I was talking to my wife this morning and I said anything between three and seven would be fine to me. I haven’t really looked at the speed, but I’m sure it’s better than the one or two.”

Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert, (Coil, Sprint, post 4; Fast Bullet, Sprint, post 6; Capital Account, Sprint, post 8) – “In each case – the four, the six and the eight – I’d say they’re all manageable; nothing too extreme. Our horses will be fine with it. The riders will all be able to do what they need to do.”

Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert, (Title Contender, Juvenile, post 1; Power Broker, Juvenile, post 9) – “We’re OK with our two in here. The nine outside (for Power Broker) is all right. It’s not like you’re out in the 14 or something like that. It will be OK. The inside (for Title Contender) is good, too. We’re going long here, so the post isn’t so important.”

Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert, (Fed Biz, Dirt Mile, post 5) – “Drawing in the middle is fine. The five is a good spot; not too far out, not too far in. We can handle that.”

John Sadler, (Monument, Juvenile, post 5; Capo Bastone, Juvenile, post 7) – “I see no problem for either of them. I really got good draws for all my horses.”

John Sadler, (Lady of Shamrock, Filly and Mare Turf, post 6) – “For a mile and a quarter race we wanted to draw mid-to-in and save as much ground as possible, so that’s fine. She’s not going to be up on the pace and hopefully she’ll be able to find a good spot from there.”

John Sadler, (Switch, Filly & Mare Sprint, post 10) – “We were hoping for something toward the outside because there’s a lot of speed in that race and at seven-eighths she runs from off the pace.”

Kiaran McLaughlin, (Emcee, Dirt Mile, post 7; Fortify, Juvenile, post 8) – “We weren’t worried about post position (for Emcee). That’s why we went in the mile (instead of the Sprint). Shackleford is just inside us. We’re probably the two fastest horses, so that’s probably good for us. I like (post 8 for Fortify) because we won’t be in the gate too long. There are not a lot of bad post positions going a mile or a mile and a sixteenth. He won’t be in the gate too long. He did act up in the gate the first time we ran him, so it’s good.”

Mark Casse, (Delegation, Dirt Mile, post 2; Dynamic Sky, Juvenile, post 6; Spring in the Air, Juvenile Fillies, post 3; Spring Venture; Juvenile Fillies Turf, post 5) – “I am very happy with them all.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (Dreaming of Julia, Juvenile Fillies, post 5; Kauai Katie, Juvenile Fillies, post 8) – “Julia has found herself very close to the lead in her races and I’d imagine she’d be able to sit off a horse just as well. Kauai Katie is in a good spot outside. It’s not a huge field (eight). Beholder is probably the fastest of all, but this filly has found herself forwardly placed. She has plenty of speed. Drawing the outside we’ll see what (trainer) Todd (Pletcher) and (jockey) Rosie (Napravnik) come up with.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (Bridgetown, Turf Sprint, post 9) – “He’s sort of a 5 1/2-furlong specialist, so this is unchartered water for him from any post. He should be able to sit a good trip from there though, and he’s been working well over the grass here.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (In Lingerie, Filly & Mare Turf, post 12) – “The 12-post is not going to hurt. Obviously we’re trying a bit of a new dimension for her here by trying the turf for the first time, but we’re hoping for her synthetic form to transfer to the grass.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (Tara From the Cape, Juvenile Fillies Turf, post 8) – “I think it’s OK. The key to a race like that is getting some position into the first turn. She should be able to do go ahead and place herself forwardly.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (Turbo Compressor, Turf, post 2) – “I thought last time (John Henry at Santa Anita) he would have set the pace, but he didn’t. He’s in a ground-saving spot and hopefully he’s able to lay close. If he does end up on the lead, he’ll take them as far as he can.”

Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, (Turbulent Descent, Filly & Mare Sprint, post 6) – “She likes this race track and it’s a great draw. She’s been touting herself in her works at Belmont, so she should be sitting on a nice effort.”

Mike Mitchell, (Obviously, Mile, post 3) – “The post doesn’t matter with this horse. He’s the speed of this race so he could have drawn anywhere. Inside is probably a bit better because he’s closer to the rail. He’ll be in front, that we know. Joe (Talamo) decided to ride him that way and that’s the way he goes.”

Mike Stidham, (Willcox Inn, Mile, post 7) – “Anywhere would have been fine.  He’ll be back a bit and should be in a good spot going into the first turn.”

Peter Miller, (Kindergarden Kid, Turf, post 8) – “The post wasn’t really critical for him going a mile and a half. He comes from off the pace, so all he has to do is get position.”

Peter Miller, (Reneesgotzip, Turf Sprint, post 7) – “Seven is perfect for her. She’ll be second last to load and that’s good even though she’s always been a good gate horse. From that post, (jockey) Garrett (Gomez) can get a good position and survey the situation as the race begins to unfold.”

Richard Mandella, (Beholder, Juvenile Fillies, post 1) – “She is likely to be on the lead anyway because she’s such a naturally fast horse, so the post is fine. The nearer the rail the better with one like her.

Richard Mandella, (Jimmy Creed, Sprint, post 2) – “The two will work. If I had my choice, I’d have taken somewhere in the middle – the five, six, or seven. But he’s going to be in the second flight in this race, sitting just off of them, so the two will be fine.”

Richard Mandella, (Rumor, Filly & Mare Sprint, post 5) – “The five is fine. I’ve got Mike (Smith) up and all I’m going to tell him is ‘Go get ‘em.’”

Simon Callahan, (Slim Shadey, Turf, post 11) – “We certainly wanted to be more outside than inside; it gives us more options. We certainly didn’t want to be one thru four. We expect he’ll be close to the pace, so the 11 is fine.”

Steve Asmussen, (Tapizar, Dirt Mile, post 8; Justin Phillip, Sprint, post 5; Unbridled’s Note, Turf Sprint, post 13; Great Mills, Turf Sprint, post 3; Dust and Diamonds, Filly & Mare Sprint, post 3) – “I wish Justin Phillip and Dust and Diamonds had drawn a little farther out, but I think they all drew OK. Tapizar is eight of nine, so that could be interesting, but he’s outside of horses like Emcee. Unbridled’s Note and Great Mills are 13 and three. That’s a very contentious race, so we’ll just see what happens. The thing is, you could be happy with your draw and break bad and that changes everything.”

Tim Ice, (Brown Almighty, Juvenile Turf, post 7) – “I wanted to draw somewhere in the middle so it worked out perfectly.  When the 14 pill came out I was holding my breath (hoping they didn’t call our name). The seven post is great.”
