Yawanna Twist wins General George Yawanna Twist wins General George

Yawanna Twist, winner of the General George Stakes (gr. II) in February, had to be euthanized after fracturing a femur in a hind leg while getting up following routine ankle surgery earlier this week.

The Richard Dutrow Jr.-trained horse was at the Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington to have chips removed from each ankle. Coming out of anesthesia, Yawanna Twist apparently “got up the wrong way,” Dutrow said.

So sad, a good honest race horse, so young a horse, barely old enough to have his adult teeth…

Oh, this is so sad.  RIP Yawanna Twist.  One of my friends likes to say, “NO surgery is ‘routine’”…perhaps the recovery pool is not a bad idea even when it is considered “routine” surgery.  Prayers for all…

I’ve spent most of the last week in tears. Could not even enjoy my beloved Union Rags victory because I’m so worried about Giant Ryan and we lost him and now Yawanna is gone and John is hurt how seriously we really don’t know and another horse goes down under him and is gone also. Is not sport competition supposed to be fun. Dear Lord, how much more fun can I take.

I know what you mean, Ida. I’m to the point, I dread reading the Racing News to see who has died over the weekend. I admired Yawanna Twist for his tenacity in racing. I agree with JC regarding the recovery pool, even on routine surgeries. I remember Ruffian all too well, when she was coming out of the anesthesia & fractured her other leg.
