Event of the Year Dies in Venezuela
Multiple Grade 2 stakes winner Event of the Year died early last year in Venezuela, it was reported by the Daily Racing Form.
The 17-year-old stallion by Seattle Slew died in January 2012 due to complications from colic. Event of the Year had stood the past few seasons at Gran Derby in Venezuela, and his first crop of 2-year-olds will soon be hitting the racetrack.
Event of the Year raced as a homebred for the late John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm. During his 3-year-old season, the colt won the G2 Jim Beam Stakes for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, but was forced to miss the Kentucky Derby due to a knee fracture.
After he recovered from his injury he was sent to Richard Mandella, who sent him out to a victory in the G2 Strub Stakes as a 4-year-old.
