Desert Sun, broodmare sire of Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar, and sire of New Zealand Horse of the Year, Sunline, has died at Eliza Park in Victoria, Australia. The pensioned son of Green Desert was 24.

Bred by Charlton Down Stud in England, Desert Sun began his racing career in his home country before being transferred to Bobby Frankel in California. Under Frankel’s tutelage, Desert Sun ran second in the 1993 Golden Gate Fields Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap and third in the Bel Air Handicap (gr. II)

The New Zealand-bred Sunline was a four-time Horse of the Year in her homeland, and a three-time Horse of the Year in Australia. The talented mare won 13 group I races.

Australian-bred Black Caviar extended her unbeaten record to 22 with her heart-stopping victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Eng-I) June 23.

For the benefit of the general public that American Racing – ostensibly, and with great fanfare (repeatedly, since @ 1985) – wants to attract to their gambling sites:

    Please define “broodmare.”

Try to remember the Alabama judge in the film, “My Cousin Vinny” asking, “What is a ‘Yoot?!” [the Brooklyn pronunciation of "youth"].

“Broodmare” to non-racing fans, sounds about the same.

If you want an “insider” culture, you end up with insider handles ($).

The mother of a horse is referred to as his “broodmare” or “”dam”.  The father of that mare would be the broodmare sire or damsire.  E.g., if you were to look at a horse like Secretariat, his immediate pedigree would be Bold Ruler(sire/father)-Somethingroyal, by Princequillo.  Somethingroyal was Secretariat’s dam, and Princequillo was her father/sire, so he was the damsire.  Thus, Somethingroyal was Secretariat’s “broodmare”, although you are more likely to see her referred to as his “dam”.  Hope that helps… :-)

RIP Desert Sun–he sure produced some beautiful progeny.

Sure does, BB, thanks for putting the time and effort into the explanation!

My thought wasn’t to jettison the terms, but if we use them in these sort of articles, something along the lines of your simple, clear explanation is absolutely necessary – and really has nothing to do with the terms themselves, but the instant confusion that readers experience when they see such arcane (to them) terms.
