Awesome Patriot, a stakes-winning full brother to 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow, has been retired from racing and will stand the 2014 breeding season at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm in Lexington as a participant of the farm’s growing Share The Upside program. His fee will be $3,500 stands and nurses.

“With his pedigree, Awesome Patriot offers breeders a lot of value and upside for $3,500, particularly to those taking advantage of our Share The Upside program,” said Ken Wilkins, Spendthrift stallion director. “Awesome Patriot possesses one of the best sire-making pedigrees, and most current pedigrees, out there, and he showed both talent and quality on the racetrack. His dam has produced Oxbow, but her most expensive yearling to date has been Awesome Patriot, which speaks to his good looks. We invite breeders to come out this weekend and see him at our Open House.”

A $350,000 yearling, Awesome Patriot is by emerging sire of sires Awesome Again, and out of the mare Tizamazing – a $1 million yearling herself, and a full sister to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) champion and leading sire Tiznow. Awesome Patriot’s full brother is 2013 Preakness (G1) winner Oxbow, and the immediate family also includes current leading older horse and Grade 1 winner Paynter. Paynter is also by Awesome Again and hails from the mare Tizso – a full sister to Awesome Patriot’s dam, Tizamazing.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Awesome Patriot won his debut as a 2-year-old at Hollywood Park, defeating the likes of Grade 1 winner Coil. He became graded stakes-placed in the Hollywood Prevue S. (G3) before stretching his speed around two turns to win a one-mile allowance race at Santa Anita in 1:35 flat as a juvenile. At 3, Awesome Patriot won the Alydar S. at 1 1/8 miles at Hollywood, earning a 97 Beyer.

Spendthrift is conducting an Open House this coming Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the farm from 12-3 p.m. each day, featuring Awesome Patriot and the other Spendthrift stallions. All breeders are invited to come out for inspection. Lunch will be served.

Standing him in KY? Wow, that’s a bold move. He needs to be in PA or FL, definitely not KY.
