UFC star Conor McGregor is promoting the Pegasus World Cup to his millions of followers

The first Pegasus World Cup Invitational, now just three weeks away, has solicited as its spokesman one of the most popular athletes on the planet. To say he's a talker is an understatement.

In this week's Friday Show, Scott Jagow and Ray Paulick discuss the choice of Ultimate Fighting Championship star Conor McGregor as the frontman for the $12 million race.

Plus, since when did the word “stallion” become offensive? Enjoy this week's edition of The Friday Show.

US t’bred racing’s cutting room floor is littered with remnants creative, effective marketing concepts and campaigns. Nice to see a guy willing not to be governed by that which has contributed to getting the sport stuck in time. The FD High folks chose poorly, if there is (even suspected) evidence it truly bothers a representative portion of those involved, move on to more important things.

    • Lawrence R

I’ say to him “Go Baby Go!!!!

  • Mike Connors

Love the bit between McGregor and Lovitz, good stuff! The more important question is “who’s the blonde?”

    • talkingman17

      Good observation.

  • Richard C

“I’m Gonna Be First” should have been rolled out on Pegasus merchandise before the ad campaign….and….WWE masterfully markets new merchandise for its stars; which should be studied by other organizations in sports and entertainment that seriously need of a blueprint.

  • Always Curious

A few years ago South Park had a PC episode where their school mascot was changed from the “Cows” due to PETA outrage. I can’t remember the new name but it eventually was changed back to Cows. Maybe the Madden farm had a few cows on it.

  • Judoon

I doubt you would support calling both the girls’ and boys’ teams the Mares. So why is it okay to be sexist and refer to girls as Stallions? Of course, as men, you haven’t dealt with the sexism that many women endure, so why not scoff. And yes, sticking girls’ teams with a male name stinks, no question.

    • Rachel

Lots of girl teams out there have been called Lady Stallions. Don’t be such a girly-girl. :)

      • Mr J

Shes being a pc sht disturber

      • Lawrence R

How about the Stallions Mares?? Too sexes?????

    • SteveTG

Call The girls’ team The Mares & the boys’ team The Mayors. Problem solved. ;)

  • Mr. Blues

That was heart breaking watching Chrome leave his groomsmen.I feel for them.Art Sherman says Dortman will take over his stall and that will make him feel good .My heart and feelings go out to the entire Chrome team today…Heart breaking!

    • tony a

Where you get any of that here? Boo Hoo! give me a break.

      • Mr. Blues

Just another hater ! I read alot of your post Tony always a negative

        • Mr J

Tony’s right. Man up fer chrissakes

      • talkingman17

Heartbreaking is children in Syria starving and being bombed with there parents dead.

        • Don

Yes it is. But heartbreaking is also losing a dear friend, man or beast. These people have cared for this amazing animal since he was very young. 24/7 they have been there to attend to his every need. Yes it is heartbreaking to see it end. Their hearts will ache and long for his company for years to come.

        • Michael Castellano

Yes, by Putin, the great friend of the new president.

    • artistinwax

Could putting Chrome with strangers cause him to be “depressed” missing Raul and everyone else? Could it cause him to lose the race? Why don’t they stay with him at least until Pegasus Day, and take care of him afterwards until he goes to the breeding farm.

      • Mr. Blues

It was my understanding that Chromes entire team would be there ,including his Groomsmen? Untill he takes that final ride???

        • artistinwax

I must have misread the article the first time.

      • Lawrence R

What makes me depressed is reading all these posts.

  • Letitride

Any time you can get someone like this guy ( he is one of or if not the biggest personalitys in sports at this time ) with all his followers to do something for our sport it is only going to bring people to this event that otherwise wouldn’t what was going on the day of this race!!!…#BIGTIMEPLUS!!

  • LongTimeEconomist

Why does a major race need a “spokesman”???

    • tony a

Well they can bask in relative anonymity.

    • gus stewart

When horse racing has become comparable in growth with bowling, thats when…

    • talkingman17

Nobody knows its a MAJOR race!

      • LongTimeEconomist

And this guy is going to educate them that it is???

    • Molly Julia

Long Time – World’s Richest Race – World’s Smallest Racetrack?

  • ctgreyhound

McGregor looks mighty spiffy in that suit.

    • thesnowleopard

Nice material, but I wish men would learn how a suit is properly tailored: The creases at the button are a no-no, the shoulders too narrow and the stripes in the material at the pocket improperly aligned…sigh

      • ctgreyhound

Thanks for educating me on the fine points of tailoring. These things really hadn’t occurred to me, but on reexamination I’m taking it all in. Maybe Mr. McGregor needs to find a replacement for his custom tailor or was this just a suit off the rack that saw adjustment……..

        • thesnowleopard

Looks off the rack but he’s Irish and the vest suggests it was tailored there or in England by a young tailor unaware of tradition. He looks as stuffed into it as Dolly Parton in her ….

          • Quilla

You both are too much! :)

          • thesnowleopard

lol, hey, they made this about fashion and celebrity – it’s Miami!

  • nodouble

Well I guess Gulfstream needs a spokesman for the BIG race just like Seabiscuit and War Admiral, Swaps and Nashua, and Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure did…well they had a lot of spokespeople they had EVERYONE. This race is a joke and adding insult is the fact that just to get in to the track they’re charging $100 a ticket…forget seats…just wondering is this graded race..? Lollllll

    • Mr J

Bigger joke if it rains in Cal this weekend. Arrogate wont train and he’ll scratch

      • FRS

Baffert and Arrogate are afraid of a wet track? And he’s being considered for awards? Gimme a break.

        • Mr J

He could have shipped him early if he saw the weather. As much as I want to see Arrogate beat CC and be a super horse,if this is true I hope he retires and goes to stud. The alternative is to watch him beat up on tomato cans all year at 1/9. Yawn

        • Molly Julia

Imagine – Raining Real Hard For 2017 Pegasus World Cup & California Chrome & Arrogate – Late Scratch = Any Refunds For $100 Ticket?

      • gus stewart

And if cc somehow doesnt get in the gate and start, for all of u saying this race was a bad investment for others doesnt seem like a bad investment then would it. thats why its called a gamble, and its a horserace, nothing is set until the gates open. That is also why this type of idea has so many elements to keep people involved until it happens.

        • Molly Julia

Gus – Gulfstream Park Cannot Stop The Rain On 2017 Pegasus World Cup Day – No Cover – Soaking Wet – All Seats Wet? Refund?

          • gus stewart

Molly thats another variable in this event. The difference is when your putting up 1 million in advance, and lets say cc or arrogate dont make race, then it rains and you get an off track, it turns into a spin of the wheel for all left who participate

      • Lawrence R

        Want to bet????

      • Lawrence R

IT POURED. galloped out in 137in hand

        • Mr J

          Not today. BOOM !

          • Lawrence R

I guess Baffert was right to wait after all.

    • David Juffet

      No. lol!!!

    • Lawrence R

All those horses you mentioned are from an era when every newspaper in the country carried horse racing news. They got headlines. Cannot be Graded .Look up the rules .

  • copperhead

I cringed at the line in the McGregor promotional about taking one too many punches to the head. It made me immediately think of the piece about jockeys’ lingering health problems from traumatic brain injury. Other than that, although I haven’t followed MMA much in recent years (used to watch UFC), I think cross promoting sports is never a bad idea.
Personally I am tired of the not too subtle assumption that toughness and skill in sports is about having testes. That’s why non-horse people pick “stallions” as opposed to something like “wild horses.” If I were back in high school, I wouldn’t mind being on a team called “The Shared Beliefs”, combines a tough little Kentucky horse with a phrase that syncs with teamwork. Or maybe “the Outriders.”

    • Lawrence R

” The Shared Beliefs” sounds like a team from a religious school.

  • HideousZippleback

I’m female and I think the “Stallions” thing so lame. Get over it people.

  • surfola

If they want to keep people in the sport of horse racing…try fixing the heater and get some HD tv’s ( Jockey Club, San Mateo, Ca.). We don’t need a sport celebrity.

  • Saratoga Bob

Have been attending major racing events for 50 years have never been so disgusted with the Gulfstream management handling of the Pegasus Stakes It took 2days to get through to ticket agents And another day to contact agents for parking tickets The price of this event is outrageous considering the horse owners are paying the purse cost. Will never go back to Gulfstream would have canceled but book flights prior to the being scammed for 100 bucks to get in without a seat .Killing their fan base is taking place at this event .

    • Lawrence R

The entire purse will be retained by the participants. Entire net profits on the race will be split up by them also. Stronach is eating most of the cost of putting it on TV and he will be losing money on the event. So whats a hundred bucks to get in compared to the $300. a night it’s going to cost you to stay at one of the beach hotels? Apparently you can afford the expense so why not just relax and enjoy.

      • Molly Julia

Lawrence – Imagine Paying For Parking – When There Is No Parking – Refund?

        • Lawrence R

Walk Take a cab or limo, a bus or roller-skate in, Who cares?
Any thing else to nit pick at?

    • Molly Julia

      Saratoga Bob – World’s Richest Race – Without A Grandstand – Refund?

  • Jack Frazier

No matter who steps up and is in the gates for this race, I will watch it. Chrome has been around for such a long time and except for the misstep when he was sent to England, he has danced every dance very well. It would be fitting for him to go out a winner of the Pegasus as well. Our sport needs horse heroes who stay around a long time because retiring them after their three year-old year to stand them just depletes racing of equine heroes. I understand why they do it, but too many of them, even if they have run well just don’t produce. I hope it is a stellar field but so far, he is the only one who stands out. Arrogate? A very nice horse who is developing and has the look of a champion. No knocks on any of them. Let them race.

    • Molly Julia

      Jack – $10 For Pizza & $10 For Coke – Refund?

      • Jack Frazier

Hope they don’t pay per view for this race or I am out. Won’t. Some more of the “Underpriced” race track food. Do people with common sense run the food business in racing? Think not.

  • Lefty_Orioles_Fan

McGregor is doing his job, but I don’t care who wins or loses this race.
It does not appeal to me.
Paying an entrance fee of 1 million dollars is insane
As I have stated b4, I would rather spend a million bucks on horses, than I would winning 7 million.
Plus, after taxes and tags what is left?
I don’t have time for that.

    • Lawrence R

You don’t have the million $ either. I”m sure . So relax. A million to the guys putting it up is chump change to them.

      • Lefty_Orioles_Fan

Yeah, despite the big money involved here, I don’t really care about the race. McGregor is going to get non horse racing fans interested.
This Pegasus is not Kentucky Derby like, it’s all about the Benjamins, not true horse racing.

        • Larry Ensor

Racing has always been about the “Benjamins” by and large. No so much for the owners of Steeplechase horses in this country. Nor the fans. Which there are quite a few of. Far more show up at the average Jump meet than the average flat race day. Even Stakes days.

          • Lawrence R

How many meets each year compared to the abundance of racing days at god knows how many race tracks. How about Polo Matches? Pony shows ?

          • Lefty_Orioles_Fan

Okay, but still. Who is truly clamoring to see Arrogate or California Chrome?
            Not me.

As for Steeplechase, I don’t see that too much, except for like Saturday Morning on TVG and I want the races over the UK. I have to admit, it’s kind of fun to watch, but I have no clue as to who the best horses are.

  • Audrey Gulla

Mr. McGregor is quite the showman & that seems to be what young people are drawn to. If he can encourage more people to participate in & hence to learn to love the horseracing game I’m all for it!

  • UKBlue

I don’t know who I feel more sorry for: the person at the ad agency that came up with this idea & thought it would work, the person within Pegasus that approved it & thought this would work or the sucker that got stuck paying for this thinking it would work. Of course it was done with the hopes Connor UFC fans will cross over; unless Connor going to be on the tv broadcast talking, they could careless. At best they get a few of his fans to watch for the day, but long term nothing. If anything this just demonstrates the horse business desperation & how badly the business has no idea how to market itself.

    • gus stewart

For those of you that missed my information about ufc fans. First horse racing has big problems in marketing itself, i agree 100 percent. But with this choice, i see a future development,
this guy.. big difference in age and demographic. Also a new parimutual betting on sports thats in Colorado and in most vegas books,, it has more betting on one ufc event, then combining all other sports for that day.. we cant fix how ad company constructs thier commercial spots,, no comment there, but this guy is a good thing, from my marketing background experience

  • Molly Julia

Imagine Taking Your Kids To See California Chrome Race For $100 Each – 5 Kids = $500?

    • Lawrence R

Children do not belong at a race track no less than at a casino or bar.
