Turfway Park played host to its signature day of racing Saturday with the running of the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes, which was worth 50 points toward a start in the Kentucky Derby. Black Onyx rallied from off the pace to spring a 15-1 upset, and his connections promptly made him a late nominee to the KY Derby.
In New Mexico, Sunland Park was the site of the $800,000 Sunland Derby, which saw Govenor Charlie dominate the field and set a new track record. The Bob Baffert-trained colt also earned 50 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
