With just five graded stakes on the docket over the past weekend, there was little change in the American Graded Stakes Standings. There was, however, a bit of activity on the AGS leading jockeys list.

Hall of Famer John Velazquez remains securely in first among the top riders, despite not finding his way to the winner’s circle in any graded stakes last weekend. The Eclipse Award-winning jockey had to settle for second in Saturday’s biggest race, the G1 Mother Goose, as his filly, Dreaming of Julia, found herself no match for Close Hatches.

The Mother Goose not only provided Close Hatches with her first Grade 1 victory, it also moved Joel Rosario to within three wins of joining Velazquez at the top. Rosario has now won 20 graded stakes races, and the contest between the two riders sets things up for an exciting Saratoga meet.

Channel Lady joined Close Hatches as a two-time graded stakes winner with her victory in the G3 All Along Stakes at Colonial Downs. The 4-year-old filly by English Channel also captured the G3 Suwanee River at Gulfstream Park in February.
