Portantina cruised to victory under jockey Jose Lezcano Saturday afternoon in the Dama del Caribe – the female version of the Clasico del Caribe – at Hipodromo Presidente Remon in Panama. Claire Novak covers the story for ESPN Horse Racing.
A lightly raced 3-year-old filly, Portantina is owned by Augusto Boyd, the head of the Peruvian Breeders' Association and owner of Haras San Isidro. It was Boyd's first victory in the Series del Caribe, a two-day event with five races of varying conditions and importance.
