LIVE BLOG FROM OAKLAWN PARK

There are a lot of people sitting on pins and needles in Hot Springs, Ark., this afternoon, all waiting to see what happens at Santa Anita Park and Fair Grounds when two-time champion Zenyatta and Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra make their 2010 debuts in anticipation of their long-awaited match-up, scjheduled to take place  in the $5-million Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park on April 9.

From the hotel and motel owners, bar and restaurant operators, the folks who sell their front lawns for parking spaces to souvenir stand concessionaires and Oaklawn Park owner Charles Cella, everyone has the same question: Will they both show up?

Consensus seems to be in the 50/50 to 60/40 range that the Battle of the Amazons will take place, though anyone who’s been following Rachel Alexandra’s camp carefully in recent days wouldn’t be surprised to see Jess Jackson burst racing’s bubble and say his filly won’t come to Hot Springs.

Behind the scenes, there have been discussions for national television for the Apple Blossom, though the Paulick Report has learned that NBC Sports, which will have its camera and crew in place at Oaklawn Park for the April 10 Arkansas Derby, has passed on the opportunity.

If that’s the case, the best opportunity for the Apple Blossom will be on ESPN, which is currently scheduled to show the second round of the Masters golf tournament from 4-7 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) If the published reports of the last couple of days are true and Tiger Woods makes his comeback in the Masters, and has an afternoon tee time for the second round, a 7-8p.m. Eastern time slot would have a terrific lead-in audience.
 
Sunset in Hot Springs will be around 8:35 p.m. (Eastern Time), and track officials are planning to put the Apple Blossom very late on the card. Thus, it’s possible the race could go off at close to prime time in the East Coast and a reasonable time for a wide viewing audience in the Midwest. But many West Coast are more likely to be sitting in their car on a freeway at post time for the Apple Blossom.

A further indication of ESPN’s interest in the Apple Blossom could come later today when they may cut in to SportsCenter to show Rachel Alexandra’s and Zenyatta’s comeback races. Let’s all hope for a safe journey for both of racing’s superstars.

Today’s attendance at Oaklawn is probably in the vicinity of 25,000, and it’s not easy to navigate through the crowd lined up for beers, food and wagering inside the gr7andstand (not to mention the long line for the ladies room). I can’t imagine what this place will be like on April 9 if Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are here.

5 p.m. … Oaklawn Park’s general manager, Eric Jackson, stopped by the press box and updated the Paulick Report on plans for the Apple Blossom. It looks pretty the certain the race will be run at 7:45 p.m. (Eastern) as the 11th and final race on the program. Jackson said. That makes a one-hour ESPN spot all the more likely following hte Masters from Augusta. While some will complain that racing needed to be on a broadcast network, the 7-8 p.m. timeslot on the networks belongs to local affiliates who fill the hour with trash like "Access Hollywood," "Entertainment Tonight" or with game shows like "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune." 

Jackson talked bluntly about the economics of offering a $5-million purse for the big race. "God bless Charles Cella,"  Jackson said. "From a sporting standpoint, this is one of the greatest gestures in the history of the sport. From a business standpoint, as I said to the racing commission, it’s the dumbest thing Oaklawn Park has ever done.

"We can’t make a dime," said Jackson, indicating the Friday of the "Racing Festival of the South" would have been a sellout with or without the two champions. "But that didn’t enter into Charlie’s thinking on this."

Prices will remain the same as usual at Oaklawn Park on Apple Blossom (hot tip–the Reuben sandwich for $6.50 is a steal), though private parking lot operators said they will charge as much as $50 a spot (up from $20 on Rebel Stakes Day). The infield will be open, and for the first time Oaklawn will have hospitality and corporate sponsor tents there–even though they don’t have any corporate sponsors yet. "We had a staff meeting when we first came up with this and someone said, ‘You want us to do in seven weeks what most people have a year to do?’" Jackson said. "I told them, ‘No, we actually have eight weeks now.’"

Handicapper Paul Skelton tried to convince Jackson the Apple Blossom day races will be stronger along with the following day’s Arkansas Derby because horsemen shipping in will sent other horses to fit the card. Jackson thought about it for a second and said, "Okay, maybe now we’ll only lose $4.7 million instead of five. That makes me feel a whole lot better."

So it all comes down to what Bill Murray’s character in "Caddyshack," Carl Spackler, got the time he caddied for the Dalai Lama and got stiffed on his tip. "I say, ‘Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.’ And he says, ‘Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness.’ So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

So will Charles Cella and Eric Jackson. Gunga galunga.

5:40 p.m. …  Well, if the Tampa Bay Derby is any indication of how this day is going to go, it could get a little strange. Odysseus, making his stakes debut after romping to a 15-length allowance/optional claiming win at Tampa Bay, surged to the lead right at the wire to edge Schoolyard Dreams by a nose in a weirdly contested race. Super Saver, the 3-2 favorite who set fractions of :23.52, :47.02, 1:11.74, and 1:37.42, was a close third for trainer Todd Pletcher.  Final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:44.37.

Rajiv Maragh had Odysseus in a perfect striking position throughout the Tampa Bay Derby but the Malibu Moon colt looked to be struggling at the top of the stretch, falling back to fourth or fifth position when Schoolyard Dreams moved to the lead. But as Schoolyard Dreams and Super Saver battled in the final sixteenth, Odysseus squeezed between them and had just enough to get up at the wire and win in a head-bobbing finish. Local hope Uptowncharlybrown had a rough trip from the rail, having to block and steady around the final turn before winding up fifth. Gleam of Hope was pinched back to last after the start but rallied into contention on the stretch turn before fading to fourth.

The winner races for Satish Sanan and family’s Padua Stables and was the 2-1 second choice in the wagering. The $250,000 OBS March 2-year-old purchase, bred in Kentucky by Haymarket Farm and Lakemont Stable, is trained by Tom Albertrani.

6 p.m. … Saw Airdrie Stud owner and former Kentucky Gov. Brereton Jones  earlier in the card and didn’t think much of it when he said he’d only been to Oaklawn Park three other times, and each  time he ended up winning a graded stakes race on the day. "Of course, I don’t really know if we belong in this field," Jones said about his filly No Such Word’s chances in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes. All I could think about as the Canadian Frontier 3-year-old filly pulled away from favorite Beautician and the rest of the Honeybee Stakes was "Thanks, Gov!" The filly is trained by Cindy Jones, whose husband, retired trainer Larry Jones, is one of the most recognizable hotwalkers in all of racing.

6:16 p.m. … The fillies are walking toward the starting gate for the New Orleans Ladies and I notice that Rachel Alexandra has taken about $975,000 of the $1 million in wagers in the show pool.

6:20 p.m. … It got awfully quiet at Oaklawn Park when Zardana pulled up alongside Rachel Alexandra  and then went right on by in the stretch run of the Ladies to win by three-quarters of a length. Trainer Steve Asmussen has been telling anyone who would listen that he’s concerned Rachel wasn’t quite fit enough, and guess what? He was right. 

Zardana, coming off a fourth-place finish in the Santa Maria Handicap for John Shirreffs–YES, THAT JOHN SHIRREFFS, also the trainer of Zenyatta–is a Grade 2 winner of the Bayakoa Handicap at Hollywood Park who was ridden to perfection by David Flores. Zardana settled into third position  while Fighter Wing set fractions of :23.84, :47.22 and 1:12.86 for six furlongs.  Calvin Borel had Rachel Alexandra second early, racing wide around the first turn and then just off the leader down the backstretch while appearing a bit eager. She moved to the front before hitting the far turn, but was quickly under attack from Zardana, who had all the momentum entering the stretch. Rachel Alexandra fought back, feeling the sting of Borel’s whip four times from the left hand four times from the right, but then the rider wrapped up on the filly when defeat was certain.

The winner, a Brazilian-bred daughter of Crimson Tide was winning for the eighth time in 19 starts. She is owned by Arnold Zetcher. Zardana paid $21 to win on a $2 mutuel. Unforgotten was a distant third, followed by Fighter Wing and Clear Sailing.

6:45 p.m. … Zenyatta did her job, winning the Santa Margarita with yet another dramatic stretch run. More in a few minutes, but let me just say that Mike Smith did one hell of a job negotiating through traffic at the top of the stretch, then swinging ooff the fence and winning comfortably without ever going to the whip.

6:52 p.m. … Champion Lookin At Lucky just got up to win the Rebel, defeating Noble’s Promise by a nose, with Dublin third. That wasn’t what I would call a comfortable win, and I’m not thinking Lookin At Lucky looks like a horse who has another three-sixteenths of a mile in him.

6:55 p.m. … Planning to escape the press box for a while and catch the post-Rebel press conference. Back in a little bit. Need to catch my breath. Too many exciting races in too short a time.

7:30 p.m. … Horses in the paddock for the day’s final 3-year-old prep,. the San Felipe at Santa Anita.

7:35 p.m. … I asked one of Lookin At Lucky’s co-owners, Mike Pegram (pictured, left), if he thought after today’s narrow win in the Rebel if he thought the Smart Strike colt could get a mile and a quarter for the Kentucky Derby, and he had a quick response. "Mickey Mantle never knew he could hit a curveball till they threw him one. This horse is an athlete."

Trainer Bob Baffert said jockey Robby Albarado aboard Noble’s Promise put Looking At Lucky in a box near the half-mile pole and said jockey Garrett Gomez told him he got bounced around a little near that point of the race. Watching the head-on replay as the horses were pulling up when Gomez could be seen saying something to Albarado. "Look, he’s telling him something," Baffert said, "He’s saying, ‘You sonofabitch!’"

Dublin ran a solid third behind the top pair after moving toward the lead at the top of the stretch.

7:50 p.m. … Like taking candy from a baby. That’s how easy the win by Sidney’s Candy was in the San Felipe. Under jockey Joe Talamo, the John Sadler-trained colt cruised through soft fractions of :24.39 for the opening quarter mile, :48.55, 1:13.53 and 1:36.26 en route to a final clocking for the 1 1/16 miles of 1:42.30. Interactif chased early and late, finishing second, beaten about a length, with American Lion third after taking back off the early pace while wearing blinkers for the first time. Sidney’s Candy was coming off an easy win in the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes, so this was the Candy Ride colt’s first try around two turns.Sadler’s other entrant, Dave in Dixie, a stretchrunner, never fired.

8:00 p.m. … I am still in absolute awe of Zenyatta and the manner in which she won the Santa Margarita, spotting from 11 to 15 pounds to her rivals and coming off a four-month layoff. Today’s win was "only" by 1 1/4 lengths, and the filly that finished second, a 51-1 shot named Dance to My Turn, is obviously not a world beater. But when Smith was caught in traffic at the top of the stretch more than a few people watching the telecast around me said ‘She’s gonna lose.’ But just as in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Smith found room along the inside (he’s not Five-Wide Mike any more), then guided her into the clear to make a breathtaking run to the lead in a matter of strides.

I don’t want to get in the 2009 Horse of the Year debate, but those who continue to put Zenyatta down mystify me. What more could they possibly want her to do? 15-for-15 is pretty darned good.

8:25 p.m. … Media relations director and race caller Terry Wallace stopped by for a chat and you could feel a great sense of disappoint about the Apple Blossom from him—not that the race or the day will be any less exciting for racing fans (with or without Rachel Alexandra, since Zenyatta is scheduled to come here either way). "If both fillies were to come here off a win, this would have really given the sport something it needed,"  Wallace said. "It will still be a big day, but this really took the starch out of the sails." He agreed that it would be like a prize fighter losing his warm-up bout before a championship boxing match against an opponent he’d never faced. Racing people understand that prep races are meant to get horses ready for something bigger down the road, but the general sports fan or non-racing media person might not. The New Orleans Ladies should be viewed with the same significance as a spring training game for Major League Baseball or a pre-season game in the NFL.

The only problem with that philosophy is that Jess Jackson wants to win them all, and now that Rachel has lost carrying his silks I’m afraid he will back out of the Apple Blossom,. even though veteran horsemen I spoke with after the New Orleans Ladies thought it was an excellent prep race for Rachel Alexandra.

8:45 p.m. … Bouncing around yet again, I want to revisit the Rebel Stakes. Lookin At Lucky really had a rough trip, according to the Equibase footnotes: "Lookin At Lucky, bothered start, settled off the pace and on the inside, jumped across Noble’s Promise heels when that one came out just outside the half-mile marker, quickly recovered, advanced four wide into contention turning for home, set down, late bid, gained the nod in a game effort."

"There was a lot of race riding going on. They put him in a spot," said Baffert, who said he got exactly what he wanted out of the Rebel, whether Lookin At Lucky had gotten up to win or not. "This was kind of a Kentucky Derby experience he got." Baffert hasn’t been to Oaklawn Park for over a decade, but said he really liked the dirt surface of the main track, saying it’s as close to Churchill Downs in its composition as any track he’s seen. He even told the track superintendent he’d like to take him back to California with him. (Of course, I have to wonder how many days Baffert would be here before he started complaining about the track surface, something he’s known to do just about anywhere he’s been stabled.)

He said "anything’s possible" regarding the next start for Lookin At Lucky, though indicated the Wood Memorial or the Arkansas Derby would be the most likely spots. He compared Looklin at Lucky to the first of his three Kentucky Derby winners, Silver Charm. "You know he’s gonna give you everything he’s got," Baffert said.  Speaking of Silver Charm, it was when he was considering what to do with Bob and Beverly Lewis’  horse after scratching out of the Santa Anita Handicap that he said, "We could either go the Oaklawn Park for the Oaklawn Handicap or Dubai for  the Dubai World Cup (which Silver Charm won), but it’s a lot easier to get to Dubai." The private jet owned by one of Lookin At Lucky’s owners made Baffert’s trip to Hot Springs a little easier this time around.

9:20 p.m. … Oaklawn Park is becoming one of my favorite racetracks in the country. It’s all about horse racing, and the management and staff seem to always put on a good show. Today’s attendance turned out to be 36,298. Yes, a lot of them came in hopes of winning the pickup truck and boat/trailer given away, but find me another track that packs ‘em in like this on the weekends. From Arkansas billionaires to farmers in bib overalls they love their horse racing here in Hot Springs and the whole region that Oaklawn Park draws from.

Come April 9, the day of hte Apple Blossom Invitational, this place will be jumping again, whether or not Rachel Alexandra shows up.If she is here, she’ll be a lot fitter and better prepared filly than she was today in the New Orleans. And if she isn’t here, racing fans will be treated to what I think is the greatest female Thoroughbred in my lifetime. It will be a day to remember…. no matter what.

CALLING JACKSON’S BLUFF

Jess Jackson could have waited until Friday night at 9 o’clock or so to send out a press release anouncing his regrets for not pointing Rachel Alexandra to the April 3 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. Oaklawn owner Charles Cella had proposed increasing the Apple Blossom’s purse to $5 million if Jackson’s 2009 Horse of the Year and the unbeaten two-time champion mare Zenyatta were both in the starting lineup for the race.

That’s what the president of Toyota did—schedule a press conference for 9 p.m. on a Friday night–to respond to mounting public outrage over safety problems with cars produced by the world’s leading automotive manufacturer. Spin doctors always advise their clients to put bad news out late on a Friday to get the lowest possible publicity and media coverage.

But not Jess Jackson. He had the courage to send out a press release at the end of the business day on a Wednesday, when most racetracks East of the Mississippi were closed due to blizzard conditions. His press release was very clever, too, utilizing an old-fashioned smokescreen—a grand proposal for a three-race series between the two distaffers—to obscure the fact Rachel Alexandra would skip the Apple Blossom. To make matters worse, he made trainer Steve Asmussen the fall guy who had to deliver the bad news: ““Out of respect for the level of competition and the importance of this race, I have told Mr. Jackson it was not in the best interest of the horse to race on April 3,” Asmussen was quoted as saying in the press release. “Getting to this level of fitness after a six-month layoff takes time.  If all goes according to schedule, and we do not have any further weather delays, the earliest we could have a prep race would be the middle of March. It is then not fair to Rachel to ask her to race again three weeks later.”

I could be wrong, but I think that’s the most Jackson has allowed Asmussen to say since the California winemaker bought Rachel Alexandra after her victory in the Kentucky Oaks last spring.

But the confusing part of the release was Jackson’s statement that the proposed racing series between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta has been “in the works for several weeks.” If that’s the case, why did Jackson indicate even the slightest bit of interest when Cella proposed the Apple Blossom purse increase?

Also, why is Jackson suddenly relying on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association to put something together? The NTRA owns no racetracks, has no authority over tracks, stakes schedules or race conditions, and doesn’t even have any juice left with television networks.

If anything, Jackson should be asking the Breeders’ Cup—not the NTRA–for assistance in putting the series together and promoting it, since racing fans hope the two fillies will remain sound throughout 2010 and eventually go head-to-head in either the Breeders’ Cup Classic or Ladies’ Classic this fall at Churchill Downs. A series of races betweem the two leading up to the Breeders’ Cup would be in that organization’s best interests, and the Breeders’ Cup does have stronger ties to ESPN for broadcast opportunities.
 
Finally, if the proposal by Jackson was genuine, why on earth were Jerry and Ann Moss not even mentioned in the press release. As Zenyatta’s owners, I think they might want to have some say in this proposed series.

Sorry, Jess, but I’m calling your bluff.

WHO WILL TELEVISE THE APPLE BLOSSOM?

A potential April 3 matchup at Oaklawn Park between Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra and unbeaten, two-time champion Zenyatta may be the best news racing fans have heard in a long time. Oaklawn Park owner Charles Cella announced the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap would have its purse bumped from $500,000 to $5 million if both horses run, and the race would be lengthened from 1 1/16 miles to nine furlongs. It would change from a handicap to an invitational if both participated. If either fails to enter, the Apple Blossom would revert back to a $500,000 race.

Left unaddressed in the press release from Oaklawn Park was whether any network television plans for the race have been formulated beyond TVG and HRTV. April 3 is a busy day on the racing and sports calendar.

NBC will be televising two important races for 3-year-olds late that afternoon, the Wood Memorial from Aqueduct and Santa Anita Derby from Santa Anita Park in Southern California. Would NBC try to squeeze the Apple Blossom into the same broadcast, and would Oaklawn Park agree to share such a marquee event with two prep races for the Kentucky Derby?

The NBC deal was done with Churchill Downs, not the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, which formerly was responsible for much of the horse racing industry’s television exposure, primarily on the ESPN family of networks. The NTRA, while no longer in the television business and Oaklawn Park no longer a member of the NTRA, have assured the Paulick Report they will aggressively work with all parties to promote this event. According to Keith Chamblin, “The NTRA has and will continue to do everything it possibly can to maximize the promotion and television exposure of a showdown between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta.”

Post time for the Apple Blossom could be a tricky decision, too. If the race is run after 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time (Arkansas is in the Central time zone), it could go head to head with the first of two Final Four games in the men’s NCAA basketball tournament from Indianaapolis, which will be televised on CBS that evening. If it is run between 4:30-5:30 p.m. Eastern, it could butt heads with the Wood Memorial and Santa Anita Derby.

Needless to say, with the Final Four games scheduled that night, horse racing will have a difficult time getting much coverage in the mainstream press around the country. But if Oaklawn Park can pull it off, it will be a huge day for the Arkansas racetrack, and existing fans of the sport will have got what they wanted.

TEXAS TWO-STEP?

Sam Houston Race Park and sponsor Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale continue their pursuit of an epic Rachel v. Zenyatta meeting in Texas. Increasing the maximum purse to $2 million, the date has tentatively been set for March 27 and would be called the Gallery Furniture Distaff.

FINLEY WARNS ABOUT GETTING ON THE ‘GREYHOUND’ BUS

Turf writer Bill Finley, in a special to ESPN.com, sees the end of greyhound racing in Massachusetts as a cautionary tale that horse racing and other animal-related sports need to heed. Once the public views a sport as cruel to animals, whether it’s true or not, that sport’s days are numbered.

GONE BABY GONE?

Ten years ago many of the grand poobahs of American racing gathered in Tucson, Ariz., for the University of Arizona Racetrack Industry Program’s 25th annual Symposium on Racing. There was great anticipation of the event, in large part to get an update on the fledgling National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s efforts to organize a “league office” and provide national leadership for an industry that had none in areas like marketing and television. The NTRA had commenced operations a year earlier, in 1998.

There’s something about this game that brings out the knockers (no, Tiger, not that kind), and the NTRA was under intense criticism at the outset in many different quarters from people who thought a) their chief executives didn’t know enough about horse racing; b) they were paid too much money; c) the “Go Baby Go” catchphrase developed by New York advertising agency Merkley Newman Harty was mindless; d) their first-year marketing campaign featuring Lori Petty (aka “Tank Girl”) was horrible; and e) horse racing’s television ratings and the economics of the industry weren’t getting any better and the NTRA had already been in a business a whole year!

Oh, for the good old days!

Pari-mutuel handle in North America during the NTRA’s first year in 1998 hit an all-time record, of $13.8 billion, and it increased for the next five years, peaking at $15.9 billion in 2003. At the end of 2009, total handle in North America will be less than what was generated in 1998.

In 1999, when chief executive Tim Smith delivered a state of the NTRA address at the Symposium on Racing he spoke about increased television exposure, including a new series, NTRA Champions on Fox, and additional programming on the ESPN family of companies that would bring the total number of hours of televised racing on network and cable (excluding TVG) to 137, an increase in 40% over two years.

Nearly $30 million was spent on national and local advertising using NTRA-branded material in 1999. Inserts promoting major racing events were placed in Sports Illustrated and USA Today. There were NTRA “fan guides,” racetrack customer service training coordinated by NTRA, new events like the NTRA All-Star Jockeys Challenge, in-depth market research and increased lobbying in Washington, D.C.

Thoroughbred racing, for a brief period, was playing offense, an unfamiliar strategy for this industry. Sure, a few years earlier, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America (a trade association of tracks, not to be confused with the NTRA) hired an outsider, sports marketing executive Brian McGrath, to come in and play the role of “commissioner,” but his tenure was over almost as soon as it began.

Why is it this industry so often says it needs outside expertise, then bludgeons whoever is brought in under that guise because “he doesn’t understand racing”?

Today, while its top executives are back at the Arizona Symposium on Racing, all the NTRA can do is play defense, a glorified game of whack-a-mole. There’s no talk about growing the sport and its business anymore but of how to stop the bleeding. Racehorse injuries and fatalities here. Tote credibility problems there. Threats from Washington, D.C.  There is no such thing as NTRA marketing or television anymore. The organization’s skeleton staff in Kentucky and New York is stretched to the bone, and its budget has been continuously reduced, now standing at about $10 million, a fraction of what it was 10 years ago.

What happened?

The organization’s fate was sealed when Frank Stronach, not long after he started buying racetracks, declared he didn’t need the NTRA for his Magna Entertainment to succeed (how’s that working out?). Stronach petulantly threatened to drop out of the NTRA and joined with other short-sighted track-owning malcontents that forced NTRA executives to spend most of their energy keeping the coalition from crumbling. That’s not a formula for success.

Any chance of building the NTRA into some semblance of a “league office” finally ended when the Breeders’ Cup, which signed a joint operating agreement with the NTRA in 2001, ended its relationship five years later.

I’m not even sure why we have an NTRA any more. Its area of interest almost completely overlaps with the aforementioned TRA, with the lone exception of lobbying federal politicians to maintain tax breaks for horse owners (something, incidentally, the racetrack organization TRA should care about, since it needs horse owners to race at their tracks).

At that 1999 Arizona racing symposium, Smith introduced the NTRA’s second-year ad campaign, one that featured the actor Rip Torn talking to chunks of turf and statues of jockeys like a crazy person. Torn hasn’t had the best of times since then (witness his two arrests for suspicion of drunk driving), and neither has the original Go Baby Go girl, Lori Petty (she had some driving problems, too).

But both Torn and Petty have survived the ups and downs of life, something I can relate to as well. I’m not sure we’ll be saying the same thing of the NTRA, which could be Gone Baby Gone before we know it.

There are some big races at Saratoga, Arlington Park and Del Mar this weekend, highlighted by Commentator’s bid for a third consecutive Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on Saturday, the International Festival of Racing the same afternoon featuring the trio of Grade 1 races–the Secretariat Stakes, Beverly D. and Arlington Million–and unbeaten Zenyatta’s bid for a 12th consecutive win in Sunday’s Grade 1 Clement Hirsch at Del Mar.

ESPN will be televising the Beverly D and Million from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Eastern, while HRTV will provide live coverage of the Secretariat. This year’s fields emphasize the international aspect of the Arlington  Festival, with Aidan O’Brien sending Black Bear Island over from Europe for the Secretariat and the Beverly D and Million each attracting three foreign runners. The invaders may have the upper hand in the Beverly D; horses trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, Dermot Weld and Criquette Head are always dangerous. The Million will be a test to see how good Christophe Clement-trained Gio Ponti really is. The son of Tale of the Cat is coming off three consecutive Grade 1 wins at distances ranging from a mile to 1 3/8 miles, and he has shown a devastating closing kick.

The 8-year-old gelding Commentator only has one way of going, on the front end, and there appears to be only one horse in the field of seven—the allowance winner Tizway—who might put early pressure on Commentator.  The Argentine horse Asiatic Boy figures to be very tough in the Whitney for Kiaran McLaughlin. Both TVG and HRTV will be showing the Whitney (post time at 5:47 p.m., just five minutes after the Arlington Million. The Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies a half-hour earlier gives Saratoga its second Grade 1 race of the afternoon. Unbeaten Cat Moves (another by Tale of the Cat) will be very tough in there.

Out West, Del Mar will pack ‘em in to see Zenyatta try to defend her crown in the Hirsch. She won the race last year (when it was a Grade 2 event) by only a length, turning in her patented stretch run to get the job done easily enough. The daughter of Street Cry hasn’t scared anyone off though, as there will be a field of 10 for the 1 1/16-mile race. Life Is Sweet, second in Zenyatta’s 2009 debut, the Milady at Hollywood Park, could be the biggest threat to end her remarkable streak.

The Clement Hirsch goes at 7 p.m. Eastern and is shown exclusively on TVG and the various sports channel that pick up the racing channel’s big race broadcasts.

SELLING TRIPLE CROWN AS A PACKAGE DEAL

With solid television ratings throughout the 2009 Triple Crown season and contracts expiring next year with NBC (which broadcast the Kentucky Derby and Preakness) and ABC Sports (which produced Saturday’s Belmont Stakes telecast), horse racing is in a strong position to negotiate a new deal for racing’s premier events.

The big question when the negotiations with various networks begin later this summer is whether the three racetrack companies that present the races — Churchill Downs Inc., Magna Entertainment’s Maryland Jockey Club, owner of Pimlico, and the New York Racing Association — will work together through Triple Crown Productions or continue to go their separate way on TV contracts.

The three tracks ended an 18-year cooperative venture in 2006 when the New York Racing Association worked out its own deal to telecast the Belmont Stakes on ABC. The breakup followed a rift among the tracks over how the rights fees would be distributed. According to published reports, NBC, which broadcast the three Triple Crown races from 2001-05, paid $51.5 million for the rights to the three events, with Churchill Downs receiving 50% and Pimlico and NYRA getting 25% each. In three of those five years, when a Triple Crown was on the line (War Emblem in 2002, Funny Cide in 2003 and Smarty Jones in 2004), the Belmont telecast drew the highest ratings of the three events, and former NYRA chairman Barry Schwartz was among those who felt the revenue split was inequitable.

Coinciding with the breakup of the TV package on NBC was the loss of the Triple Crown’s title sponsor, Visa USA, which ended a 10-year deal that included a $5-million bonus to any horse that wins the Triple Crown. That sponsorship was said to be worth $25 million. With Triple Crown coverage divided between two networks, Triple Crown Productions has been unable to secure another title sponsor since Visa’s departure.

Prior to Visa, Chrysler Motors had sponsored the Triple Crown Challenge, which in addition to the bonus to a Triple Crown winner also paid a $1-million participation bonus to the horse that accumulated the most points in all three races. Some critics said that bonus scheme might convince an owner or trainer to put an unsound horse that had won the first two legs in the Belmont Stakes just to make it around the track and win $1 million. That, of course, is a ridiculous suggestion when you consider the residual value or future earnings potential of a horse that could be compromised by such a move.

The participation bonus ended in 1993 after points leader Prairie Bayou broke down in the Belmont and the late Paul Mellon collected $1 million when his Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero finished seventh in the Triple Crown’s final leg. It was a sullen presentation ceremony, and Mellon graciously donated the money to the Grayson-Jockey Club Equine Research Foundation.

The Triple Crown may have lost some continuity and promotional value since the participation bonus and points standings were dropped, though it can’t be proven statistically that such a bonus would convince more owners to run their horses in all three races. Participation does seem to have fallen in recent years.

This year, Mine That Bird and Flying Private ran in all three races; in 2008, Big Brown was the only one to do so; in 2007, there was Curlin and Hard Spun; 2006, no horses ran in all three; 2005, Afleet Alex and Giacomo; 2004, Smarty Jones; 2003, Funny Cide and Scrimshaw; 2002, War Emblem, Medaglia d’Oro and Proud Citizen; 2001, Point Given, A.P. Valentine, Monarchos and Dollar Bill; 2000, Impeachment; 1999, Charismatic, Stephen Got Even, Menifee and Adonis; 1998, Real Quiet, Victory Gallop, Basic Trainee; 1997, Silver Charm and Free House; 1996, Editor’s Note, Skip Away, Louis Quatorze, Prince of Thieves, In Contention and Cavonnier; 1995, Thunder Gulch; 1994, Go for Gin and Tabasco Cat; 1993, Sea Hero, Prairie Bayou and Wild Gale; 1992, Pine Bluff and Casual Lies; 1991, Hansel, Strike the Gold, Mane Minister and Corporate Report; 1990, Unbridled and Land Rush; 1989, Sunday Silence, Easy Goer and Hawkster; 1988, Winning Colors, Risen Star and Brian’s Time; 1987, Alysheba, Bet Twice, Cryptoclearance  and Gulch; 1986, Ferdinand; 1985, Chief’s Crown, Eternal Prince and Tank’s Prospect.

Triple Crown Productions and the two bonuses were created in reaction to a decision by the owner of 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck to skip the rest of the Triple Crown and go for a bonus created for a Derby winner that also won a trio of races in New Jersey. For the first time, the three tracks worked cooperatively on marketing, television and nominations. Since the 2006 split by NYRA, Triple Crown Productions’ principal role has been reduced to securing nominations for the races and unsuccessfully seeking a title sponsor. Even the nominations aren’t fully cooperative; the three tracks have different eligibility conditions as we learned with this year’s Preakness Stakes and the short-lived conspiracy to keep Rachel Alexandra out of the field because she was a supplementary nomination.

Let’s hope the tracks opt to work together on a TV deal and put the races back on one network. Other sports, including the NFL, the NBA, and Major League Baseball, thrive by having their playoffs on more than one network, but the Triple Crown consists of just three events, not multiple rounds of playoffs that lead to one championship. This year, there was a very good promotional buildup on NBC leading to the Kentucky Derby, and even stronger marketing of the Mine That Bird vs. Rachel Alexandra matchup before the Preakness Stakes. But things seemed to fall flat in the transition from NBC to ABC, perhaps helped in part by the indecision regarding Rachel Alexandra’s participation in the Belmont. There seemed to be very little promotion of the Triple Crown’s final leg on ABC or on the ESPN sister family of networks until just a few days before the Belmont. ABC’s production values also seemed low in comparison to NBC.

Ratings were extremely solid for the Derby and Preakness on NBC, and even without a Triple Crown bid on the line and seemingly little promotion by ABC, the Belmont Stakes performed well in the ratings, too. This isn’t a sign that overall popularity in racing is on the rise but does suggest that the sport’s marquee events still capture the interest of a large segment of the public.

If the tracks work together, there are great possibilities, not only on NBC and ABC/ESPN but on Fox and CBS. The Triple Crown remains a highly desirable television property, especially if it is held together as a unit where 1+1+1 equals more than three.

WANT TO SELL RACEDAY TO SPORTS FANS? LOOK TO DUBAI

Since the inception of the Paulick Report, I have stayed under the radar. Outside of the Eclipse Awards live blog and a few small ghostwriting opportunities, I have been the behind the scenes guy on a publication I am very proud to be associated with.
 
And this is for good reason. Before mid-June 2008, I was like most Americans when it came to horseracing. Somewhere around the last two weeks in April, I would jump onto ESPN.com and pretend to be an expert analyst when discussing the Derby field around “the water cooler.” (I’ve worked for myself for a while and therefore only have Brita filter, so please allow for the stretched euphemism)
 
After countless minutes of exhaustive research, I would find my “guy” and throw $20 his way. Win or lose, I would tune into the Preakness and plan on the Belmont Stakes if there was a Triple Crown shot. By the beginning of June, my racing season was ostensibly over.
 
I tell you this because after nearly a year on the Paulick Report staff, I have become a serious fan of racing. And furthermore, I believe it can be effectively sold to the average sports fan. It’s a more fascinating and exciting sport than I’d ever realized. And the really cool thing is you can bet on it – legally.
 
I’m a hardcore baseball fan whose prized possession of his childhood is a signed Carlton Fisk Louisville Slugger. Each year, I watch nearly every University of Louisville basketball game; from their home opener against North Minnesota State A & M to their final encounter in the tournament.  And I am such an avid football fan that I traveled to Chicago to watch my Bears beat the Packers in -20 degree weather.
 
Unfortunately, the only reason I fell in love with this sport is because of my work here. Had I not been hired by Ray and found myself in a racing crash course, it’s unlikely I would have ever been a fan beyond the first Saturday in May.
 
I grew up in a major racing city, Chicago, and have lived in Derby Town U.S.A., for several years. The fact I had not been lured by a sport with so much to offer means there is a failure in selling the game to a passionate sports fan. Until Saturday, I wasn’t quite sure the path to redemption. But when I watched the stark contrast between our television production values and those in Dubai, I knew at least where we needed to start.
 
ESPN’s coverage of the Florida Derby was dry and appeared to have little time or money spent on the production value. It felt more like the third day of an average PGA tournament than a major Derby prep race. If I didn’t know better, I would have little concept of just how big the stakes (pun intended) were that day for the horses running at Gulfstream Park.
 
Television is a visual medium and therefore production value wins the day. When CBS produces the March Madness basketball tournament, they don’t make a sweeping shot over the court and deliver a distant camera angle like racing likes to do. Instead, they pop you in the mouth with exciting clips, exploding graphics and camera angles that put the viewer right at courtside. After the first five minutes of a broadcast, my heart is pumping and I’m so hooked I don’t even notice Ray calling me for the eighth time that day.
 
Before watching the Dubai World Cup’s live feed on Saturday, I would have just assumed Thoroughbred racing had a brother in hockey, a sport that simply loses something on TV. But as I continued to watch the Dubai coverage, with its emotional build and track view camera, a similar feeling came over my body. It was a new sense of March madness, one I hadn’t ever expected.
 
Guys like me want to find new sports to obsess over. We love the thrill of competition and thirst for new outlets to find that action. And a lot of us like to bet. Deliver us visual fireworks, place us on the field of play and get our hearts racing. Once we’re hooked, we will be customers for life. The sports fan is an obsessive creature and before too long, we’ll find ourselves watching midnight replays of claiming races at Ruidoso Downs on TVG. (I speak from experience)
 
But the Paulick business model probably won’t transfer. You can’t hire all of your potential fans.

PROJECT OAKS DAY

Can the cable network Bravo do for 3-year-old female Thoroughbreds what it’s done for countless wannabe runway models or packs of shallow housewives in New York City, Atlanta or Orange County, Calif.?

Come to think of it, I’m not sure I really want that to happen.

But with Bravo — the sister network to NBC Sports in the NBC Universal family of media companies – televising this year’s Kentucky Oaks for the first time on May 1, it’s anybody’s guess the type of programming we’ll see. A press release from Churchill Downs says the one-hour telecast (5-6 p.m. Eastern) will focus on the “food, fashion and celebrity experience” associated with the Kentucky Oaks. The NBC Sports production and on-air team televising the Derby on May 2, led by host Tom Hammond, will be available for the Bravo telecast, so here’s hoping they’ll be able to find time to show the horse race, too. With a possible field that includes Stardom Bound and Rachel Alexandra, it could be one of the most interesting and best Kentucky Oaks in recent history.

First, though, let’s give Churchill Downs management credit for hooking the Oaks with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization. It’s a most worthy cause, and if Friday is still considered by some to be “ladies day,” there may be no better time for the horse racing industry to raise awareness and research money to help find a cure for breast cancer.

But let’s be real for a second. The Kentucky Oaks is one of the best and most important fixtures on the Thoroughbred calendar, and a perfect setup to the following day’s Kentucky Derby. It’s been part of ESPN’s Derby week coverage for many years. Moving the Oaks to Bravo – a network best known for shows like “Project Runway,”
“Top Chef,” “Real Housewives of …” and “Tabatha’s Salon Makeover” – is a sign that Churchill Downs is giving up on growing the Oaks as a sporting event and making it more about fashion and celebrity.

That apparent shift in philosophy (the Kentucky Derby web site is also putting a great deal of emphasis on fashion, parties and entertainment) coincides with business developments involving the longtime horse racing provider to ESPN, the Tulsa, Okla.-based Winnercomm. Winnercomm, for years known as Winner Communications, the company founded by Chris Lincoln and Jim Wilburn, was purchased earlier this year by the Outdoor Channel.

Winnercomm has traditionally been horse racing’s gateway to ESPN, but many of Wilburn’s close associates at ESPN are no longer at the network, so he doesn’t have the “juice” he once had. Winnercomm’s deal with Churchill to provide Derby week coverage ended, as did his agreement with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association to produce racing telecasts.

Churchill Downs opted to negotiate directly with ESPN for programming (without Winnercomm), and in this difficult economy they didn’t really want to be on the hook for the cost of the programming without having assurances they would be able to generate enough revenue through advertising to pay for it. ESPN apparently wasn’t interested in trying to sell the programming, and Churchill didn’t want to work through Winnercomm. Thus, there will be no “Breakfast at Churchill Downs” programming on ESPN or ESPN2, and no “Kentucky Derby Draw” or “Kentucky Oaks” telecasts. ESPN will televise some of the Derby Day undercard, which traditionally has attracted a relatively large audience. The Oaks and other Derby week programming has not done very well in the ratings, though Wilburn always managed to sell advertising for them.

Sources have said ESPN will not have live programming from Pimlico during the week of the Preakness, either, though there may be programming from Belmont Park leading up to the Triple Crown’s final jewel. The Derby and Preakness telecasts are shown on NBC, while the Belmont is on ABC, a sister network to ESPN.

Complicating all of this is the fact that Churchill Downs and Magna, which owns Pimlico, home of the Preakness, are partners in the racing cable network HRTV. If the Oaks and Pimlico’s Black-Eyed Susan (which, like the Oaks is on a Friday), were telecast on ESPN or ESPN2, that network most likely would have wanted exclusivity, which would have prevented HRTV from showing the races live.

Like many things in racing, there is no central leadership here. The NTRA, which has its own deals with ESPN for prep races leading up to the Kentucky Derby, has never been given the responsibility of negotiating TV time for the Triple Crown tracks, which have done so on their own or through Triple Crown Productions. The Triple Crown itself is now divided between NBC (Derby and Preakness) and ABC (Belmont). Bob Evans, the CEO of Churchill, is widely viewed as someone who is more interested in technology than television. Magna, of course, has its own problems with bankruptcy, Wilburn, horse racing’s former “go to” guy for getting the sport on ESPN, has lost his clout with the “worldwide leader in sports.”

Perhaps all of this might make a good reality show … on Bravo!
