ROSARIO DUMPS JOCKEY AGENT STAUFFER FOR EBANKS

One of California’s top jockeys Joel Rosario fired jockey agent Vic Stauffer whose tenure with Rosario lasted only 16 months.

"I got him at the fall meet of Hollyood in 2008," Stauffer said. "At that time, he was 10th in the standings; he ended up second. The next meet was the main one at Santa Anita, he finished third.  The next meet was Hollywood spring; he was leading rider. Then was Del Mar; he was leading rider. Then came Oak Tree. He had a chance to tie for the title in the last race of the meet and finished second."

"Joel contacted me contacted me yesterday after the races…I was heartbroken."

If your ain’t first your last in this game. He is just a B rider anyway.

  2. T.N. Trosin Says:

The circle of race track life. I have to disagree with ya Rom, considering the colony at SA and what this kid has done, he’s a bit better than the “B” riders that are there, but we will agree to disagree.

  3. clyde Says:

You gotta love jockey agents. Quote ” I got him at the fall meet etc….” Stauffer believes Rosarios success is because of him. LOL

  4. Burton DeWitt Says:

He can hire and fire whoever he wants; it’s his right.

Hopefully Vic bounces back. He did a tremendous job getting an above-average but inconsistent jockey mounts that were beyond his accomplishments. If I’m a young jockey in California, an Omar Berrio or Christian Santiago-Reyes, with some potential, I would definitely consider giving Vic a call.

  5. Jack Meyoff Says:

He spun more trainers than any agent in history. Karma Stinky Karma

  6. C.Fay Says:

Maybe Rosario was mad because the agents other rider won the Big Cap.

  7. Priscilla Peabody Says:

Jack is right. Vic spun too many trainers, some more than once. We love Joel, but I heard a trainer say, “If Vic had the last jock in the jock’s room, I would scratch my horse.” Thankfully now we can use Rosario again. Garcia should dump him too.

Vic is a moron who apparently likes to drink and text, a really stupid practice.

  8. eeebayou Says:

I wonder if it was the accusations that Rosario stiffed a horse that Vic later tried to buy, the conflict of interest by calling the races at Hollywood Park, the addition of Martin Garcia’s book, that Bejarano has retaken the top spot in the standings, that his jock’s agent was having additional conflicts with stewards over spinning trainers or that Rosario’s graded stakes business seems to have gotten a bit thin?

  9. Margrethe Says:

Everyone knows Stauffer is the King of Spin
Hope Garcia makes the same decision soon.
Stauffer should return to the H.P. announcer’s booth doing what he does best.

  10. watching Says:

eeebayou, I thought all those same things you brought up might have had something to do with it. Feel sorry for Tyler tho getting bumped to make room for the new guy. I never did forget that funky deal with Vic trying to buy that horse. That just looked soooo bad. Those things always stay in the back of your mind if you’re a trainer or owner.

  11. eye on you Says:

Stauffer did Rosario more harm than good. Rosario will have so much more business open to him now as a result of trainers not having to deal with shadey, snakey, spinning, Stauffer anymore. All Vic had to do was keep his mouth shut and act with some integrity, but, those two concepts are far beyond his comprehension. The fact that Stauffer thinks that Joel’s success is because of him is proof of how delusional he is.

  12. Margrethe Says:

Interesting the different opinions of Stauffer.
On Del Mar Forum he is the wronged, humble, lovable “Goof on the Roof”.
On Paulick Report the backstretch knows the real Stauffer: spinning, arrogant, profane.

  13. Sandra Warren Says:

I like Vic a lot as a racecaller, but as D. Wayne Lukas said, “All you need to be a jock agent is a pencil and the ability to lie.” I have yet to meet anyone at the racetrack who ever felt sorry for one.

  14. Horsefan Says:

Bottom line is Vic was not satisfied with only one Jockey and about 2 month ago took Martin Garcia as a second Jockey. With the support of Bob Baffert Martin has done very well and I am sure that Joel felt he was becoming second to Martin, Jockeys have big egos and are very jealous of each others. No need to look further than that

  15. Echo Says:

Vic is good people, and will do fine in the future.
JoEL also fired his previous agent, Vince DeGregory, “the greatest jockey agent of all time”.

  16. Halle Says:

    Burton DeWitt wrote:

I believe that even most jockey agents would be above trying to make the claim that Omar Berrio is a young jockey.

  17. jorge Says:

    Omar Berrio??? LMAO!!!

  18. eye on you Says:

Anyone who thinks Vic Stauffer is a good guy, obviously knows nothing about him. Take it from someone with first hand experience; he is a lying, manipulating, low down POS.
And on top of that, the biggest coward out there.

  19. Brigitte Says:

Talk about a coward…why don’t you put your name where your mouth is “eye on you?”

  20. eeebayou Says:

Anyone have any info on who might take Tyler Baze’s book?

  21. Don Reed Says:

Boy, you’d think Liz Taylor and Richard Burton went down for the count.

  22. Petey Green Says:

I don’t know the man, but it seems these personal attacks by anonymous critics are way over the top.

It’s clear the results were there after Stauffer took Rosario’s book. Remember that a jock agent isn’t paid to be a nice or genteel guy - he’s paid to put his riders on the best mounts he can. If he has to spin a trainer on occasion then so be it. His loyalty is to his rider, not the trainers. If the connections of a horse don’t like a specific agent then they can show their displeasure by not using his rider. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.

As for the ‘lying’, I think it’s a little harsh, though I don’t know the man. I do know that circumstances change when a card is drawn, and sometimes jock agents have to go back on their word to land the better mount. But that’s what they get paid for, and if they don’t do it a jock will find someone else who can. Get over it - it’s part of the game.

I liken it to poker players you see on ESPN. They almost always ‘lie’ about their hands, but it’s part of the strategy in hopes the end justifies the means. You can’t make a character assassination because of that behavior. (Personally I would have to question the intelligence of anybody who would put a lot of stock in what a jock agent says anyway. To get offended that something they tell you doesn’t come to pass is like getting pissed off the sun came up again.)

That said, it seems like Stauffer is being a bit of a whiner about the situation. He knows that what happened to him is part of the game too. In my opinion he should keep his mouth shut and take the high road.

  23. Lenny D Says:

Any one who really knows the circumstances knows that Vic had very little to do with getting Martin G into Bafferts barn. Garcia was working horses for 2 years and Bob gave him a shot and he took great advantage of it. No agent was responsible for Garcia/Baffert other than Bob and Martin. But with all due respect to Vic , He made Joel in southern California. The kid doesnt show up for works on very important horses, and has copt an attitude that will land him back in northern California real soon. No jock agent is ever really liked or spoken highly of by everybody, but Vic did an incredible Job with Joel that will be hard for the new agent to keep Joel where he is . By Del Mar my prediction is Tyler Baze will be ahead of Rosario in the standings.

  24. Bookie Buster Says:

Rosario needs Vic like NOLA needed more water after a hurricane. Bottom line is Rosario has lost out on numerous good mounts because people wont deal with Vic anymore. Tyler will soon feel that sting too which is a shame…but hey not like this hasn’t happened before on the merry go round that is the backside !
