PARAGALLO WALKS OUT ON BAIL

Convicted horse abuser Ernie Paragallo walked out on $10,000 bail today. An appellate court judge ruled he could be released while he appeals his convictions. Paragallo still maintains his innocence.

"Were there some horses that were skinny?" asked Paragallo. "Yes, absolutely…but you’ll have that in any major farm."

Why is horse racing seem to the only industry where nobody ever admits when they were wrong?

  2. sara Says:

He still doesn’t get it. He is where the proverbial buck stopped and horses lost there lives because of his appalling negligence of their basic needs.Man Up and face the facts that these horses suffered and died because you were too “busy” to ensure their safety.
He disgusts me beyond any words I can find…

  3. T.N. Trosin Says:

Walking, talking, pile of trouble since he got in the business.

  4. DickHertz Says:

Ernie, do you find horses with lice infestation at every big farm? ASSH*LE !

  5. equine Says:

No matter how he wants to look at it, it was his farm and his responsibility to provide proper care for the horses.

  6. NYC Horsefan Says:

All of you are naive. This has been a test from Paragallo and his minions. He hails from an affluent part of Long Island. His sole goal is to test your limits and . . . by doing so . . . mock the state of Kentucky.

If you have an over-reaction to this post, realize that change must occur. Even at the seemingly cruel starvation of our beloved steeds. How shall we solve this?

Post away. That will help us to save our beloved sport. When I read everyone’s well versed responses, it shall make me want to hustle out to DQ and order their latest Blizzard.

Once we read all of these, we’ll discuss and change the world. Cool?

Pre-emptive FU to the finger pointers. Go out and do something.

  7. Burton DeWitt Says:

Of course there are skinny horses on any farm, but only on a select few criminal farms are there so many horses that are fatally skinny. Luckily we have people who were willing and able to save so many of the animals Paragallo left to waste.

  8. Equine Avenger Says:

The weasel can’t even take his punishment like a man.

  9. ace Says:

After his appeal is denied I hope the Jockey Club will deny him registration privileges, forcing him to divest in everything horse related, especially Unbridled Song.

  10. South of the Border Says:

So, who’s breeding to Unbridled Song?

  11. Penn Sucks Says:

He should be on bread and water only during his sentence and be given pediculosis as well.

  12. Lin Says:

Mr. Paragalla, stop whinning and take your penalty, for being a horse abuser. Be happy your not in the hands of the people, you would be fenced in with nothing to eat or drink for months and we would take bets on how long you would last . You didn’t know BS…you didn’t CARE.

  14. lobieb Says:

Crock of BS. Sorry he is not a man but thinks he is beyond criminal charges. Just watch, he will appeal and appeal until they get sick of seeing him in court and then they will let him go. Throw the book at him and don’t let him appeal anymore, put him in jail with just bread and water and see how he likes it. Disgusting man.

  15. joe Says:

Equine Avenger, the weasel (too kind a word for scum) cannot feed his horses like a man or find homes for those he doesn’t want like a man and instead choose to send them to slaughter like scum. Where such arrogance is coming from, is he protected by the underworld and knows he’ll game the system?

  16. Susan Says:

    1. Has the Jockey Club pulled the plug on registrations from Paragallo’s horses yet? If not, why not? Their public statement in 2009 said they were waiting for a conviction, and Paragallo was convicted.

    2. Paragallo is a flight risk at $10K bail. You know that, I know that, and the judge should have known that.

Precedent: The only other case that comes to mind this bad - with so many abused horses - is the notorious James Gray case in the UK. More than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys were rescued from horrific conditions at Gray’s farm near Amersham, Buckinghamshire in January 2009.

Last month - while on appeal - James Gray absconded.

He took off from the COURTHOUSE.

He was caught, sentenced to more time and banned from owning animals for life.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7716134/Horse-trader-flees-court-before-animal-cruelty-sentencing.html

Horse abuser James Gray fled to avoid a much shorter sentence than Paragallo’s - in the UK, the most he cold get was 26 weeks, for the worst case of equine cruelty the UK had seen.

Paragallo’s sentence is still too short for the terrible suffering (we need to change the laws in NYState but that’s another story) but it’s 4 times Mr. Gray’s … even more incentive to run.

Look at Paragallo’s character, financial resourcesl and lack of remorse. He has money, connections worldwide and a host of potential hidey-holes.

$10,000 is awfully small bail for such a large ego.

    3. Any news on NYSTB’s broodmare farm inspection program talked about when the Paragallo story broke last year?

    4. Is Paragallo banned from owning horses, like UK’s James Gray? If not, why not?

    5. When is Alex Waldrop going to reverse his pro-slaughter position?

Isn’t the outrage at Paragallo enough incentive? If not for Paragallo’s use of the slaughter pipeline, he might have been convicted of even more counts, and his Thoroughbreds that wound up on a dinner plate in Europe might have had a chance at rehabilitation.

  17. Pisces Says:

Does anyone know anything about a new outfit called Midlife Crisis Thoroughbreds in KY, standing a bunch of former (maybe) Paragallo stallions? Achilles of Troy, New York Hero, Lord ofthe Thunder, etc.

  18. Virginia Says:

Ernie’s nothing but a wealthy liar and will play the system with bucks lawyers. He deserves jail time and should go with out food or very little food to see what it feels like. By the look of his pictures he does not miss a meal. I saw some of the horses they were painful to look at. There was no life in their eyes. He needs to pay for what he has done, NY needs to appoint a judge with backbone.

  19. Lexington Says:

Excuse me? Did Paragallo really say “you’ll have [skinny horses] any major farm” ? Puleez. Get a grip Paragallo. Name me one “major farm” where horses are “skinny” (as he euphemistically calls “starvation”). What on earth was that appellate judge thinking when he/she let this creep out on bail!

  20. Myectomy Says:

Here is one of Paragallo’s “Skinny” horses

  21. Erin Says:

Walks on one tenth of one stud fee from a stallion of whom he owns as many as 20 of 40 shares.

    What a joke.

  22. Pisces Says:

Actually, Ernie’s so deep into the Land of Denial (he really believes he did nothing wrong) that I don’t think he’s a flight risk. He will fight to clear his “good name.” I’m not shocked that he’s out; I figured he’d be allowed bail pending appeal — particularly since he was convicted of misdemeanors. I don’t know, but I suspect the fact that he was convicted on misdemeanors probably also put a limit on the amount of bail the judge could impose.

  23. joe Says:

Lexington: I wish that one sentence was just another lie. Sadly, non-producing and old, spent mares have been found in the “back forties” of certain KY farms, some were left out to fend for themselves, brave the elements without shelter and basic care, sometimes among cows, feeding on cheap cattle hay, and though all horses deserve equal compassion, they included precious mares, top racers and producers taken to the “back forties” because their ovaries stopped producing. Some were found to be neglected, abandoned and some were in terrible shape at a time in their lives where they need the most comfort and compassion. These ladies had more than earned a dignified end of life and empathy from those who profited from their talent, courage and generosity, although all horses deserve a humane life and end of life regardless of how much $$ they have generated throughout their lifetimes. Those found abandoned in the “back forties” might have simply been too well known to be sent to the killers.

  24. Thehorses Says:

According to the Jockey Club Unbridled’s Song bred 144 mares last year. According to an article from May 21,2010 Paragallo owns 50% of Unbridled’s Song which means he get millions of dollars this year and he got millions last year, the year before, etc. He could easily have afforded to give every single horse he owned top class care and he could have deducted the cost from his stud fee income. UBS stud fee was even higher in previous years.

  25. Noelle Says:

Joe - who are you talking about? Which horses? Which farms? Who owned these horses? What are their names? Are they still in business? To say that horses whose names we may recognize have been mistreated or neglected on KY farms without any supporting facts isn’t terribly helpful. If the law can’t or won’t deal with such people, they at least deserve exposure to public scorn.

  26. joe Says:

Noelle, you should contact one or two solid TB retirement facilities and you’ll get at least some of your questions answered.

  27. its obvious.... Says:

Sadly, Joe is quite correct. Its part of the “dirty little secret”….

  28. GregJ. Says:

The state’s Racing and Wagering Board will hold a hearing on June 24 to decide what action to take against the low life Paragallo, Mark your calender…

  29. debjones Says:

Mr Paragallo: If you are reading this, I need to hear from you (Ms Pederson has my number). I am still looking for approx 28 fillies and colts that you had picked up from your farm by a guy in SC on 3/15/10. Five of them were pulled from a slaughter bound auction in NJ on 4/28/10. They were in rough shape to say the least and wearing their dam halters. 2007 Southgate filly by Song of the Sword, Danzasouth by Adonis, Always in Fashion by Griffinite, Unbridled Ride by Song of the Sword and 2008 filly o/o Virgin Voyage by Adonis. They are safe. No thanks to you! God only knows where the others are! And did you know that Virgin Voyage died of colic a few weeks ago in foal! Virgin Voyage was given to McAfee at Mid Life Crisis Thoroughbreds. Just Wonderful a stakes winning producer was also given to McAfee. He gave her away 3 weeks ago to a KY mountain man who wanted to breed her to his Jack!

  30. debjones Says:

Oh I forgot to add that the guy in SC apparently sold them on CL for $50 to $100 because he was waiting for you to send him papers and money to feed them!

  31. Noelle Says:

Joe. OK. Who to contact? Canter mid-Atlantic? TRF? Exceller Fund?

  32. reese Says:

NYRA is complicit in all this. Paragallo was no secret on the nyra backstretch.

Now another NYRA trainer, John Campo,Jr. is caught dumping a horse that was rescued from a “slaughter” pen o mon after leaving Campo’s barn with a “broken ankle”. Horse was allegedly sent to rehab at a trotter barn in Monticello NY. What a crock.

NYRA “investigates” and says “no details but Campo is “blameless”. Campo is the brother of PJ Campo the VP of NYRA racing. And Campo, Jr. the trainer work for that other crimonal Ernie paragallo as his trainer for several years. No doubt, Campo was privy to Paragallo’ dumping horses at the killer’s, at least he learned the “tricks of the trad from his mentor, Paragallo who Campo pleaded for a break becasue he (Campo, Jr.) would have no horses to train. Enough said about Campo’s character…or lack of any really. Another amoral lowlife.

NYRA can absolve Campo the trainer for any responsibility, but who really believes this tall tale in light of Campo’s association with Ernie Paragallo? You lie down witjh dogs, and you get fleas.

NYRA actually believes this bs they spin about integrity… they are no better than the crooks in Albany.

  33. debjones Says:

Reese, Now NYRA state (DRF yesterday) they are changing the wording in their current zero tolerance policy by removing ‘indirectly’ and replacing with ‘knowingly’.. effectively removing all protection for our race horses on New York tracks! I guess NYRA would prefer to protect the connections moreso than the horses. In the years I have been pulling race horses out of the slaughter pipeline I have only had one owner (in Louisiana) tell me that he ‘knowingly’ sent his horses to slaughter!
