MONMOUTH’S KULINA: IT’S THE DEEPEST FIELD…IN HASKELL HISTORY
In a story from the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Bob Kulina of Monmouth Park has high praise for this year’s Haskell Invitational, comparing it to the Breeders’ Cup. "It’s the deepest field, and the toughest race to handicap, in Haskell history. It’s almost like handicapping a Breeders’ Cup race."
A field of eight including Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky make up this year’s version of the $1 million Grade I race. Do you agree with Kulina’s assertions?

Doesn’t Bob say this every year? I think it’s his job and he does it well.

I think it’s an exciting, competitive field when you looking at the Derby, Preakness, and Florida Derby winners, plus the Preakness runner up. It should be a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to it.

Should be a great race. Hopefully Super Saver comes out on top.

During a recent Blood Horse Q & A, Bob Kulina was asked about the safety of horses racing for such high purses and in particular $5,000 claimers racing for purses as high as $37,500, and if special precautions are in place to protect horses racing for such high purses. Kulina said that people love their horses and protecting them is not a real issue. Lame.

Absolutely agree! Kulina is to be congratulated heartily! The concentration on class, communication and expertise is a rare commodity in American horse racing these days and seldom fails. We hope that this ancient formula becomes a trend, rather than the exception!
And plaudits to ABC for their recognition of great sport!

Well, I think this year’s 3YO division is quite weak. But looked at completely independently of other years, this year’s Haskell Invitational is *very* competitive. I am very excited for Sunday.

The weather is supposed to cool off markedly by Sunday.
A race card that will feature several stakes races including The Jersey Derby
and the Taylor Made Matchmaker stakes among them.
And ABC Sports will televise the feature and hopefull the supporting stakes also.
The all time handle record for one card may fall with a little luck.
(The all-sources handle record is $17,642,955 (2008).

Yup, this field beats the 1987 Haskell, with Alysheba, Bet Twice and Lost Code.
