I am friends with many descendents whose forefathers helped with the "seed money" to establish Keeneland. I've never heard from any of them that they ever felt slighted; only that they"re proud of what Keeneland has become.

Well it's about time this was discussed!!!! I've been posing the question recently. WHY and more importanly HOW is Keeneland a CHARITABLE organization? And as for Mr. Greathouse's statement: How does Keeneland sitting on UNTOLD MILLIONS of dollars benefit anyone selling a yearling? Do the purses at a very limited meet at one racetrack really influence the price a yearling brings? GET REAL. I would truly like someone from the IRS to look at Keeneland' books to see if their "charitable" contributions are significant enough in comparison to their earnings. We know they're not. I've done a very small amount of research on this issue and I make no claims to have in depth knowledge, but it is my understanding that the designation of charlitable organizations is done at the STATE level. That certainly explains how they've managed to get away with this lie for so long. I really hope that one day, some bored IRS worker trying to make a name for himself/herself stumbles upon this socalled "charitable" instituation that is KEENELAND!!!

Excellent article Ray - you're answering questions I've often wondered about. Please, tell the racing public about Keeneland's annual donations to charity. I may be wrong, but it always seemed to be a token gesture and not very generous given their annual earnings.

I'm looking forward to the next installment.
