HASKELL MAY DEFINE THE 3-YEAR-OLD CROP

With a field chock full of Triple Crown horses from 2010, the Haskell is shaping up to be a real test of this year’s 3-year-old crop. Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky, Derby runner-up Ice Box, Preakness runner-up First Dude, Withers Stakes winner Afleet Again and much buzzed about Trappe Shot are all scheduled to be a part of the centerpiece race at Monmouth Park.

Who do you think will win this year’s Haskell? And how important a role will this year’s edition play in the Eclipse voting for the 3-year-old division?

First Dude will seize the top spot in the division with a win in the Haskell.

    Really? It’s Super Saver time!

The Haskell looks like a great race and the Travers could be just as good. Everyone talks about fixing the Triple Crown but the the 3 years olds are the only division in racing that has it right, the top horses facing each other multiple times. Without classic races like the Derby, Preakness and Belmont, the Breeders Cup dominates the other divisions. Racing needs to come up with a way to revitalize the old traditional races like the Woodward, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Big Cap, Hollywood Gold Cup etc. How about a series of races in each division leading up to the Breeders Cup with points awarded for each race and the horse with the most points at the end of the year getting a bonus and being declared champion?
I like Lookin at Lucky in the Haskell

Trappe Shot. The horse has been inproving and improving and showed there was more after the last race…..I think he’ll be hard to beat.

Just think how good the Travers could be:

-Top finishers from Haskell (Lucky, Trappe Shot, Uptowncharly, Super Saver, First Dude, Ice Box, etc.)
-Top finishers from Jim Dandy (Afleet Express, Fly Down, etc.)
-Plus Sidney’s Candy (or top finishers from Swaps)

The Haskell really only counts if Lucky wins…if he doesn’t and say SS does, SS still has to pick up another big one…who knows, maybe there’s a Tiznow ready to show up!

It seems pretty clear by virtue of their respective TC wins, if either Lucky or Super Saver should win The Haskell, either will put some daylight between himself & the rest of the 3’s.

However, if one who possess a lesser resume should win - the picture becomes even murkier than it is presently.

Truly, it’s on the early side to have things settled to the point of clarity, either way.

I’m a Lookin At Lucky fan. He seems to possess that intangible quality for bringing it every race - even when victimized by a bad ride, bad trip & even in defeat. He stands out on that factor rather than from a “numbers” perspective & in a closely matched race (on paper) that factor, a class edge, if you will, is often decisive. Looks like a good race.
