DERBY POST DRAW LIVE
As the last defections and additions are sorted out this morning (Endorsement and Interactif OUT, Backtalk and Make Music for Me IN) the Paulick Report is readying itself for the Kentucky Derby post draw in the Secretariat Lounge at Churchill Downs. We will have the results of the draw here as they happen starting at 12:00 PM EDT.
As you're waiting, we thought we'd give you a look at the Secretariat Lounge before the draw.
A little Derby info while we wait.
The gates open on May 1st at 8 am with the first of the 13 races going off at 10:30 am. The Kentucky Derby is scheduled to go off at 6:24 pm EDT with the NBC telecast going from 4-7 pm EDT. For those of you in the car during the race, ESPN Radio will be carrying full coverage 5-7 pm EDT. The total purse is $2,185,200 with the winner's share of $1,425,200. Second prize ($400,000) Third prize ($200,000) Fourth prize ($100,000) and Fifth prize ($60,000). Entry fee is $25,000, with another $25,000 to start, so $1,000,000 of the purse comes from the owners
Churchill Downs has returned to the old-fashioned "pill pull" for the post position draw, abandoning the dual process of drawing for the selection order and then giving connections of the horses and opportunity to choose their own post. The draw is being shown live on HRTV.
Lookin At Lucky will have an equipment change, the blinkers coming off, and filly Devil May Care will race with blinkers on.
Post, Horse, Morning Line

Obviously, it was a good draw for the first two choices in Mike Battaglia's morning line. Few trainers ever want the rail in the Kentucky Derby, though historically it has not been that bad of a post position. The problems arise when horses jockey for position in the first eighth of a mile, and the horse on the rail is often shuffled back. The rail is where Lookin At Lucky's jockey, Garrett Gomez, put the Smart Strike colt in the Kentucky Derby, much to trainer Bob Baffert's displeasure, and he will have a tough circumstance to overcome on Saturday.

Setsuko would be live if in this race. I do not like the current system. There should be total graded earnings for first 15 then 2010 graded earnings for remaining five spots.

Wow that’s gotta hurt. The Top 5 on yesterday’s Paulick Derby Index has been decimated. Four of them drew crappy post positions and the other one withdrew from the race.

Lookin at Lucky’s post not bad considering his style and ability. Hes got tactical speed and look at post stats. Outside is MUCH worse off.
