BRATWURST MISHAP SIDELINES PAULICK REPORT EDITOR

Ray Paulick, editor and publisher of the Paulick Report, has been sent to the disabled list for a few days after suffering a deep gash at the base of the “bird” finger on his right hand in a freak accident early Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at his home in Lexington, Ky., when Paulick stumbled and fell awkwardly while carrying a dinner plate to his deck, where he was cooking a bratwurst lunch for him and his wife, Carol. The plate shattered when he fell, causing the gash.

The injury was treated at the Central Baptist Hospital emergency room. Stitches were required and doctors told Paulick not to use his right hand for a few days because of possible damage to tendons.

“I can’t believe one klutzy step could wreak such havoc,” Paulick told the Paulick Report. “I was forced to miss both the New York Racing Association out-of-bankruptcy teleconference and the press briefing from Alex Waldrop of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association following his closed-door industry meeting to discuss horse welfare issues. I apologize to the Paulick Report readers for not being able to cover those events

“The injury is going to limit my non-verbal communication skills behind the wheel of a car and slow down my typing and note-taking once I’m able to use my right hand. But thanks to an exceptional, Web-savvy daughter who is assisting me, the Paulick Report will continue to provide the latest news and information to our readers during this brief hiccup.”

The bratwursts were uninjured.

    Get soon well, , ,Ray

Bratwurst should always been eaten with beer, I hope you weren’t defying the gods by eating them with wine or even worse iced tea!!

  3. Darci Says:

I’ll wait to read the real story behind this accident in ‘Indian Charlie’. Get well soon, Ray.

  7. Ray Paulick Says:

Thanks all for the good wishes.

#2- John. I don’t disagree about the brats and beer combo (especially at Wrigley Field for a Cubs game) but I gave up those kinds of beverages when I became a 12 stepper a few years back.

#4 Bob….I’ve still got my left hand fully functioning!

  8. Steve Kweskin Says:

Are you sure you aren’t on steroids? I hope your finger heals quickly.

  9. Cgriff Says:

    Ray,

Just wave that bandaged “bird” at Mussleman the next time he slinks by!

Brats can be dangerous in many situations - we here in Pittsburgh Steeler Country protect ourselves by layering sauer kraut on top of it! Worth a try next time - keeps the plate from shattering.

    Get well soon!

  10. Noelle Says:

OOH - sounds painful. Get well soon so you can continue helping to keep the powers-that-be (such as they are) honest!

  11. Richard R Says:

    Hey Hot Dog….where’s the mustard?

  12. Don Reed Says:

I think Dinny greased the skids!

Get well soon, get some rest! You’ve been working hard, take advantage of the involuntary break!

I’ll send in a letter about the Big Brown race (going to MP tomorrow). With my luck, they’ll scratch the grass (it rained heavily today) and he’ll romp on the dirt.

Personally, I think Dutrow will be disapointed.

  13. dailyimpact Says:

all the best for your recovery from the land of the bratwürste. maybe next time you try pigs nuckles with sauerkraut and erbsenpüree, also a favorite dish of my country fellows. and don`t forget some pils beers already whilst cooking, that provides a steady hand!

  14. Defcom 3 Says:

Ray– get well soon. I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna need BOTH “bird” fingers fully functional out there at those horse sales! Keep the pieces coming!

  15. Dustin Stones Says:

Ray, get mended up and GOTTA LOOK WHERE Y0U’RE GOIN’!

  16. edmund Says:

Caption: Ray Paulick tells Indian Charlie — we’re number 1.

Hurry back to the trenches soon. Rome continues to burn.

  18. Chicago Don Says:

Bratwurst? Bah. You were no doubt fantasizing about a Cubs v. White Sox match-up in the World Series.

    Da Cubs.

  19. L.K. Says:

  20. Priscilla Peabody Says:

I’ll bet you are discovering all the other things that are difficult to do with one hand, and if you were a woman, it would be even worse. Folding laundry, making the bed, styling your hair, and doing your nails are nearly impossible. Good thing you have Carol and Meg to help you. Oh, and don’t drive and flip with one hand either.

  21. Richard Shapiro Says:

Okay, I didn’t do it! But, go ahead and blame me, that is what Jamgotchian and Baffert do for everything anyway! Good seeing you, and get well soon. RBS

  22. Faith Says:

Wish I had been there!! Glad your OK. I am reading about racing again, THANKS!

  23. Barry Irwin Says:

I’d like to report that, coincidentally, I cooked bratwurst for dinner and, even though I am older than Ray, both my wife and I survived the cookout. Ray needs to check into the Dragon software program that allows a person to dictate rather than type.

  24. Bruce Greene Says:

Hope you’re feeling better and that the finger heals quickly. Looks like you’re going to need it now more than ever.

  25. Pattie Benedix Says:

Ray, I’m sorry to hear about you accident with the Bratwurst. Hope your finger heals soon. Thanks for all the updates regarding the Keenland Sales and Hialeah Racetrack! I always look forward to reading your Reports and I enjoy them very much! Hurry back, cause we need you:)
