A TRAVERS SHOWDOWN?
A day after his first Triple Crown win with WinStar Farm’s Drosselmeyer in the Belmont, trainer Bill Mott looked to a future showdown between the three classic winners of 2010.
"As Elliott [Walden] said yesterday, the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont winner have to sort themselves out and see who’s best by the end of the year," Mott said.
It appears that Walden is aiming to enter both Super Saver and Drosselmeyer in the Travers after a prep race separating the two horses beforehand.
"We are blessed to have both horses and, you know, we’ll probably look to separate them in the next start, but probably come together in the Travers and see what happens," Walden said.
It is currently unclear as to the plans for Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky regarding the Travers. Is the Travers the right choice for all three classic winners or is there another race you would like to see them face off in?
Then come back to the Paulick Report and let us know what you think

I thought LAL was being pointed to the Haskell. Should LAL win the Haskell, I would not be surprised if he skipped the Travelers and runs in the Pacific Classic. Elliott Walden sure is pushing all the right buttons. Cannot wait to see SS back breezing!

While a showdown between SS, LAL, and D would be exciting, and the ‘mid-summer Derby’, a good spot in historic Saratoga, connections obviously have to think about placing their horses in the best spots, if they intend to move all the way to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. I don’t know what they’re thinking, but if the Travers doesn’t work out, the BC could be the stage, although if these three sophmores don’t square off before then, it could possibly muffle the championship picture for their division.

Baffert seems intent on LAL in the Haskell; after running Point Given in both the Haskell and Travers, only to retire him injured, didn’t Baffert say he would not again run a horse in both? My guess would be LAL and SS in the Haskell and Dross in the Jim Dandy, if WinStar is calling the shots, not the trainers. Would be great sportsmanship on WinStar’s part if both of their classic winners meet in the Travers. ‘Will be surprised to see LAL at Saratoga, even following a Haskell win.
